David Pilachowski, a member of the Reference Department staff at the University of Vermont's Bailey Library, is the poli-tical science specialist for SR's "Review Sources" column. A native of Westfield, Massachusetts, David has made Vermont his home since undergraduate days at UVM. He earned his bache-lor's degree there as a Phi Beta Kappa member with a dual ma-jot in Political Science and Asian Area Studies. All of his library work has centered on the user in the public service context of academic libraries. F o r two years following the completion o f his bachelor's work he supervised the Periodicals Department at Bailey Library where his major responsibilities were to provide, access to the closed collections and the Current Reading Room. Later, as a graduate student at the University of Illinois' Graduate School o f Library Science he worked as a Circulation Assistant. Since the Fall o f 1973 he has been a full time member of the Reference Department staff at UVM. David is also developing specialized competence in library building planning. He has been a central library resource person in planning for UVM's major library addition both as an elected representative of the library staff and later as an appointed member of the Library Planning Council, a presidential c o m mittee. For this work he travelled to numerous site examinations of library buildings and additions throughout New England and the eastern United States. And he has been a frequent registrant at A.L.A. preconference and seminar meetings dealing With this topic. Those who have been involved with him in this Work know he can quote Ellsworth and Metcalf, by heart. David almost had to give up his other library responsibilities ~Unng preparation of the final library building program when e became the library director's right hand man. He helped to select the architectural firm finally retained by the university ~ d served as library coordinator with them as they developed ueu schematics and final building plans.
SR editors Aside from this work and from the contributions he has made to SR, David is co--author of "Die Nacht der langen Messer", Der Sprachdienst, 19:9 (September 1975), pp. 149152 and compiler of subject bibliographies in his area o f spe-ciality. In particular he has prepared guides on "American Foreign Policy: Bibliographical Tools", "People's Republic of China -- Some Basic Sources", and J.P.R,S.: United States Joint Publications Research Service." Recently he and his wife Mai-sha purchased an old partially restored Vermont farmhouse in Shelburne where they live with their three year old son Justin. There he puts his interests in gardening and carpentry to active use. Next winter he brags that he'll be able to 'sit by the wood stove and keep warm with the wood cut and split in the heat of summer.' Of course, he'll be hard at work on an SR review, too.
