WATER & WASTEWATER LEGISLATION DRIVES EURO WATER MARKETS Legislative directives are emerging as the primary drivers of both the industrial wastewater, and the municipal water and wastewater treatment equipment markets in Europe, according to two reports published by Frost & Sullivan entitled European Industrial Process Water and Wastewater Treatment and European Municipal Water and Wastewater Treatment Equipment Markets. Currently facing challenging times, these maturing markets are set to achieve higher growth as compliance with numerous - and determining legislation increases, says Frost & Sullivan. For instance, the implementation of the Integrated Pollution and Prevention Control (IPPC) directive has placed enormous pressure on industries to clean up their wastewater treatment and has revitalized the otherwise sluggish market for treatment equipment. Frost & Sullivan estimates the total European industrial process water and wastewater treatment equipment market to be worth US$2.30 billion in 2003. The market is forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3% to reach a size of about US$3.08 billion in 2010. The two conventional equipment segments in industrial process water treatment, demineralization and activated carbon filtration equipment, are currently ahead of the advanced equipment types such as UV and ozone. However, according to Frost & Sullivan, the rising demand for high purity process water, combined with the increasing
acceptance of technology, is likely to drive growth in the advanced treatment segment, with the key contributors being pharmaceuticals and food and beverages. Similarly, the Drinking Water Directive has induced substantial growth of advanced water treatment equipment such as membrane systems and UV and ozone disinfection equipment. Membrane systems seem set for further growth because they provide high levels of reliability and are becoming increasingly relevant in treating complex contaminants such as insecticides for the safe supply of drinking water. The company estimates the total European municipal water and wastewater treatment equipment market to be worth US$2.33 billion in 2003. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1%, to reach a size of US$3.09 billion in 2010. Emerging markets such as Italy and Iberia show significant potential, with substantial investment planned for the development of the municipal sectors in Ireland, UK, France and Belgium. While the present pace of growth favours water treatment equipment, the bulk of investment is likely to be in the wastewater treatment market, says Frost & Sullivan.
SNC-LAVALIN WINS ALGERIAN WATER TRANSFER CONTRACT SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a C$750 million fixed price contract by the Algerian Agence Nationale des Barrages to design and build a 600 000 m3/day water treatment plant and pumping station at Taksebt, about 100km east of Algiers. The contract also includes the operation and maintenance of the facilities for a five-year period once construction is completed.
SNC-Lavalin will design several water treatment plants, supply and install 90 km of ductile iron pipes, and construct four tunnels, each 2.5 m in diameter, over an area of 11.7 km. The pipe and tunnel systems from the water treatment plant will supply water to the provinces of Tizi Ouzou, Draâ Ben-Khedda and Boudouaou, as well as to the capital, Algiers. The design and construction work on the plant and pumping station will be completed in different stages, with full completion in autumn 2007.
DEGRÉMONT TO BUILD DESAL PLANT IN CHILE Chile’s second largest copper producer and exporter Minera Escondida Lta (controlled by Australia’s BHP Billiton) has commissioned Degrémont to design and build a seawater desalination facility using reverse osmosis, to supply the Antofagasta copper mine in northern Chile. The US$28 million contract covers design, equipment supply and assembly, civil engineering and commissioning duties. The facility will take raw water from the Pacific Ocean to produce a daily 45 000 m3 of process water for the mine, which is located in a desert area 9200 ft above sea level. Under the contract, onethird of the intended flow is to be supplied by September 2005 and the full flow by January 2006. The facility will have four racks of reverse osmosis membranes. Upstream of the membranes there will be a high-performance pre-treatment line combining the usual stages of screening and grit removal with Degrémont’s Rictor fast flotation system.
