molten polymer, and reduces smoke density and toxic emissions. Non-halogen flame retardants are increasingly in demand for their eco-friendly attributes. In addition, when used in engineering polymers, the new CESA-flam compounds provide a higher level of flame retardance than their halogenated counterparts, according to Clariant. They also exhibit high-temperature stability, ease of processing and good colourability. By using the additives in masterbatch form, processors enjoy the flexibility of being able to make dosing and processing adjustments easily to meet changing part requirements, the company says. The CESA-flam grades being introduced in North America have been formulated for polyamides (both neat and glass-filled), polyesters and PET fibre/monofilaments, as well as TPUs. CESA-flam XP 8451 and XP 8454 achieve limited oxygen indexes (LOI) in the 28–30 range, while XP 8429 and XP 8486 provide flame ratings meeting UL94V-0 standards. Degussa launches zinc oxide outdoor coating grades in North America Degussa’s Aerosil & Silanes business unit has launched its AdNano® fumed zinc oxide in North America. The new additive increases the lifetime of outdoor plastics, lacquers and other decorative coatings by providing effective stability at high temperatures and long-life protection that conventional UV absorbers cannot match, the company claims. In addition to superior UV resistance, the new nanotechnology product also offers efficient processing, excellent dispersion capability and transparency, says Carlos Gonzalez, marketing manager, Aerosil Products, Paints and Coatings. “AdNano zinc oxide will enable coatings formulators to improve the overall appearance and performance of their finished coatings,” he says.
Additives for Polymers
According to Degussa, the highly accessible surface area of AdNano zinc oxide opens up the possibility for a number of other applications, including corrosion protection for coatings. The company says that, in some instances, it will be possible to reduce the quantity of zinc oxide used by substituting AdNano fumed zinc oxide for non-fumed grades of zinc oxide. AdNano fumed zinc oxide will be available to North American customers in two grades: VP AdNano ZnO 20 (hydrophilic version) and VP AdNano Z805 (silanized hydrophobic version). Samples of both grades are available for qualification. Contact: Degussa Corp, Aerosil Technical Service, 2 Turner Place, Piscataway, NJ 08855, USA; tel: +1-732-981-5000; URL: www.degussa-nafta.com
GretagMacbeth launches new online colour matching software Colour management specialist GretagMacbeth LLC has announced new online editions to its recently introduced Colour iMatch and Colour iQC colour formulation and quality control software. The company says the new editions enable centralized colour data management while allowing secure, shared access by remote locations via the internet. According to Jan-Paul van Maaren, VP and general manager of the company’s Colour & Appearance Business Unit, global manufacturers now have “an easier, more effective way to practically guarantee colour accuracy and consistency for their remote facilities, suppliers and customers”. He adds that centralizing colour data with remote online access can cut days or potentially weeks from the colour development process; colour matches can be obtained 24/7. He explains that manufacturers of pigments and dispersions, colorants, precoloured resins and compounds, masterbatches, and dyestuffs can now offer value-added services to their customers. These services can include the convenience of accessing the manufacturers’ databases of formulas to speed turnaround and ensure accuracy.
