statistical guides, etc. for the states and territories. It is available from the Council for $3.00. Certain reference tomes fall into that angelic category labeled "indispensable." These include the Statistical Abstract o f the United States, Municipal Yearbook, World Book Encyclopedia, and yes, even that asininely-titled United States Government Manual. Beyond peradventure, The Book o f the States belongs in that saintly number. Joe Morehead School of Library and Information Science SUNY at Albany, New York Delaware Statistical Abstract. 2nd ed. Delaware: State Planning Office, 1974.239 pp. $5.00.* The foreword of the Delaware Statistical Abstract states that "a broad cross section of pertinent statistical information about the State" obtained from private and public sources is contained in this edition, updating the statistics in the 1973 edition. Information has been added on revenue sharing, drug use, water quality management, voter registration, election districts, housing production and state park attendance. The statistical abstract is divided into nine sections - population and vital statistics; employment and income; industry, banking and state government; education; housing; transportation and public utilities; environment; public health and welfare; public safety. There are 66 maps and graphs, and the source is given with each, interspersed among the nine sections. These maps and graphs are listed separately, and titled. There is no subject index to the volume, but the table of contents lists each table with a descriptive title; the source is given with each table. The 1974 Delaware Statistical Abstract fulfills the purpose stated in the foreword, a compilation of statistical information on the State of Delaware. The format of the document is excellent, and the typography and paper are superior. The book has a plastic spiral binding, which permits it to lie fiat when open at any part, but I think this will cause problems when the book is used heavily. This publication would be a useful addition to any documents or reference collection, since I am of the opinion that any statistical abstract, regardless of shortcomings, is better than no statistical abstract. I welcome this addition to our collection of Delaware documents.
