On 2-3 May 1985, the European Health Policy Forum together with the World Health Organization are organizing a symposium for European health policy makers on the changing role of industry. New financing mechanisms have revealed the important share which products and materials management represent in the overall costs of health care delivery. It is estimated that products represent on average 20% of the hospital budget in most countries. However another 20% must be added for current only exceptionally very efficient - practices of materials management. Industry leaders see a potential for savings through the introduction of materials-management-support and by offering full services, instead of products only, to health care clients. These developments will be discussed in the light of their implications for cost containment and for the changing relationships between industry on the one hand and health services and government on the other. Karl Bays, President of American Hospital Supply Corporation and the Hon. J.P. van der Reyden, Secretary of State for Health Affairs in The Netherlands will be among the speakers at the 6th Joint EHPF-WHO meeting in May 1985 which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Brussels.
