If one can get past the punning title of this book, he will find in it much of interest, whether hc be parent, patient, or orthodontist. While it is written in a more or less light vein, the book is quite informatiyc and presents a digest of current orthodontic dogma and practice. Questions frequently asked of orthodentists-“Can orthodontic appliances hurt the teeth. 9” “Will teeth return to their pretreatment irregularities ?” “What to do about thumbsucking ?” and many others--arc discussctl in a manner that is understandable to the layman. Questions of surgical orthodontics, extraction of teeth as an adjunct to orthodontic therapy, when to start treatment, and use of appliances as well as their home care are given consideration. Throughout the book JVeiss maintains a conservative even-handed attitude on many questions, including computerization and growth predictions. He discausscs Salzmann’s views on “genetic engineering,” puhlishctl in 1972. The term ge~elic eagi)lreri?rg is now widely known ant1 no longer requires quotation marks. \Veiss cites a number of Nobel Prize laureates whose work ant1 expressions support Salzmann’s statcmcnts. Opposition to the term {le?zefic engi, rfxri?lg is clearly due to ignorance, as is the opposition to fluoridation. The book will serve il useful purpose in the reception rooms of those who prilCticv2 orthotlontics.

In keeping with the title, this book discusses dental caries from its various etiologic aspects, including diet and prevention of their occurrence. How genetics plays a role in the causation of dental caries is explained from the standpoint of tooth morphology, structure, and environmental saliva composition. As is generally the Case, it is not a simple matter to designate which is or is not a genetic manifestation. 105
