Dental Curriculum "W h a t are th e characteristics of th e cu rren t dental graduate?" and "W h a t should th e characteristics o f th e dental graduate be in 1980?" These tw o questions w e re th e basics of discussion fo r th e ap p ro xim ately 350 dental practitioners, dental educators, and representatives of state boards o f d e n ­ tistry, co n stituent societies, and related dental organ­ izations attend ing th e recent National C urriculum C o n ­ feren ce in Chicago.

Sponsored by the A D A C ouncil on Dental Education w ith th e cooperation o f th e Am erican Association of Dental Schools, th e co nference provided a national fo ru m fo r discussion of th e prelim inary findings o f a C ouncil study o f dental curriculum s of all US accredited dental schools. The co n ference, w hich was fu nd ed through a co n ­ tract from th e US D e p a rtm e n t of H ealth, Education and W e lfa re , focused on th e com p etency o f n ew d e n ­ tal graduates to p ro vid e com prehensive oral care.

Conference participants were divided into 12 discussion groups, each considering various aspects o f dental curriculums.

A n o th e r general session was held on th e final m o rn ­ ing o f the co n ference w hen w orksho p chairm en read reports of the conclusions reached by th eir respective groups. The C ouncil on Dental Education intends to use the reports in d eterm in in g its findings and reco m m en da­ tions em anating fro m th e curriculum study, w hich w ill be p resented to th e 1977 House o f Delegates.
