Practice plam~i?~,g is a term used at the IJniversity of Oregon Dental School to denote courses intended to prepare students for the business aspects of dental practice. The text is divided into (1) building a practice and (2) delegation of duties. Part I discusses the philosophy, community and intraprofessional relations, and office planning. Discussed also are various phases from purchasing a practice to estate plan ning. Under “Community Responsibilities,” Howard devotes space to prepayment dental plans and insurer and patient relations. Peer review of treatment, which some dentists feel casts aspersions on their professional integrity, is regarded by the author as “If you were paying someone’s bills for treatment would you pay them blindly or try to somehow assure yourself that they were reasonably justified?” It should be kept in mind that so-called “third party” relation to dental practice is in a dynamic state. The practicing dentist would do well to keep abreast of the continuing advice of the Council on Orthodontic Care of the American Association of Orthodontists. We cannot agree with t,he author on the discussion of political theories and “isms” with patients. The dentist’s politics belong outside the office, except where the welfare of dental care is directly concerned. The text contains detailed advice on delegation of duties to the secretary, the chair assistant, the dental hygienist, and the laboratory technician. The handling of finances is discussed. There is also valuable information on the logistics of dental practice for the beginner as well as for the experienced practitioner. J. A.
