NAVY DENTAL CORPS N avy Awards Bronze Star M edal to T w o Dental Officers T h e Navy Department has announced that the Bronze Star M edal has been awarded posthumously to Lieut, (jg ) Stephen M . Lehm an, Pasadena, Calif, and to Lieut, (jg ) John F. M ortell, Osh kosh, Wis., for “ heroic achievement” in the Pacific Theater. Similar citations were given, one of which follows: “For heroic achievement as Assistant Sur geon of an Assault Battalion during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, from June 15 to July 10, 1944. Voluntarily attaching himself to this unit despite his knowledge of the constant danger from terrific Japanese fire, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Mortell rendered invaluable service in administering medical aid to wounded men and in materially reducing cas ualties under extremely difficult combat con ditions. His outstanding professional skill and self-sacrificing spirit reflect great credit upon Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Mortell and his courageous conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
DENTISTS AND DENTAL SOCIETIES Thom a Goes to Guatemala as Visiting Professor Kurt H. T hom a, professor o f oral surgery, Harvard University, and oral surgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital, has accepted an assignment from the Division o f Cultural C oopera tion, U . S. State Department, to spend the month of August as visiting profes sor o f the United States to Guatemala. H e will give a course in oral surgery at San Carlos University and return to this country in September.

“ Dental D a y ” Activities M ark Massachusetts Health W eek Dentists o f Massachusetts celebrated “ Dental D ay” M ay 8 as a part o f “ Health W eek,” which has been officially proclaim ed by Gov. M aurice J. T obin fo r M ay 7-12. T h e Health W eek ac tivity was initiated by the Massachusetts Dental Society. Stephen P. Mallett, president o f the society, was honorary, chairman and H arold J. Cronin, chair-’ man o f the society’s council on dental health, was chairman. A special luncheon at which several dental organizations were represented was given by the Boston Advertising Club. Speakers included Governor T ob in , Dr. Mallett, Paul Swaffield, presi dent o f the Boston Advertising Club, V lad o A. Getting, commissioner, Massa chusetts D epartm ent of Public Health, George M a clv er, president, Massachu setts Hospital Association, Margaret Dieter, Massachusetts State Nurses As sociation, and R oger I. Lee, president, of the Am erican M edical Association. Australian Dental Association H ost to U . S. D ental Officers For more than tw o years, the Aus-. tralian Dental Association has been play ing host to United States dental officers w ho are stationed in that area, a ccord ing to inform ation received recently from M a j. H orace M . Miller, who is on duty there. In 1942 and 1943, the V ic toria Dental Association o f Australia held “ Am erican” nights, when the en tire program was presented by m em bers o f the U. S. Arm y Dental Corps. A n interallied dental meeting is held every month in Townsville, Queensland, In Novem ber 1944, the first Inter-Allied Dental Conference was held with a large attendance o f dentists from , Australia, the Netherlands East Indies and the U nited States. A nnual M eeting o f Association o f M ilitary Surgeons Canceled By a vote o f the executive council, the annual meeting o f the Association of M ilitary Surgeons, scheduled for Detroit O ctober 24-27, has been canceled. T h e council also voted to retain present offi cers until the 1946 meeting in Detroit.
WAR SERVICE COMMITTEE Dentists Included U nder Preference Rating fo r Tires Dentists are included under a prefer ence rating, issued July 1 by the Office o f Price Administration, which estab lishes eligibility in obtaining automobile tires fo r essential uses, according to a statement released by the W ar Service and Postwar Planning Committee. A uto mobiles necessary fo r dentists, physicians and surgeons, licensed as such by appro priate governmental authorities, are given a preference rating o f “ N um ber 1 (w hich) consists o f passenger cars used for vital civilian services, regular opera tion at high speed to answer emergency calls, and worker transportation to estab lishments with a W ar Production Board urgency rating o f I V or above and certi fied by the W ar M anpow er Commission as having an emergency due to m an pow er shortages.”

T he M edical and Surgical R elief Com m ittee, which has been supplying hospitals, mis sions, welfare agencies, and the fighting forces o f Am erica and her Allies with m edical, surgical, and dental supplies since 1940, is starting a cam paign to collect scientific publications for the use o f European professional men w h o be cause o f the war have been unable to keep up with new discoveries and p rog ress m ade in many fields. T h e co m mittee has received earnest appeals, especially from French and Italian au thorities, fo r all the recently published material on dental subjects that it would be possible to obtain.
