BEHAVIOR AND DESIGN OF LONG-SPAN METAL CULVERTS Duncan~ J M J Geotech Emgng Div ASCE, Vl05, NGT3, March 1979, P399-418 The interaction between flexible metal culverts and the surrouniing backfill is examined by means of finite element analyses that simulate the placement of backfill and subsequent application of llve loads. The berzllng m~nents in metal culverts are dependent on the relative flexibility of the culvert and the backfill which can be expressed in terms of a dimensionless flexibility number. Comparison between finite element results and field measurements shows the suitability of the method as a basis for design. A simplified rational design procedure is described that considers both bending and ring compression.

Considers briefly the drilling, blasting, and support operations of roadway drivage in coal mines. Discusses the possibility of organising these into a cyclical work scheme for roads of section greater than 18 sq m. 796081 E X A C T I O N OF PTTTARS ON LONGWALL PATTERN IN CONJI/NCT~ON WITH HYDRAULIC STOWING AND POWER LOADING - A PROFOSAL Sahasrabtmlhe, D G J Mines Metals Fuels, V26, N4, April 1~78, P147-163 Presents a method of extraction for use where pillars cannot be extracted with caving because overlying seams are being worked. 796082 ELASTOPLASTIC ANALYSIS OF THE o-~fRESSCONDITION OF ROCK IN THE VICINITY OF A MINE (IN POLISH) Mroz, Z; Winnlcki, L Arch Gorn, V22, h~l, 1977, PI-30 The determination of the stress distribution and movement in rock in the vicinity of a caving mining operation and the effect of mining on surface subsidence are discussed. Finite element analysis is applied. Taking account of non-elastic properties in relation to elastic
