Colleselli, F; Coloelmo, P Riv Ital Geotec, Vll, ~I, Jam-Mar 1977, P5-21 Relx~ts an investigation in the overconsolidated fissured P~-ioceme-Plelstoce~e clays bc~lering the middle Adriatic coastline, following a slide in 197~. Resul~s are given for soil classification~ unconfined coml~ression teats~ triaxial tests, consolidation tests and for topographical resesrch in the region. Slope stability problems in this type of clay are discussed.

forced with galvanized steel ties, it appear~ that the Rankime earth pressure theory provides a good approximation for the measured lateral pressure when the wall is carrying little or no surcharge load. Prior to failure under a substantial surcharge loading, the measured lateral earth pressure was maximum at the middle third of the wall amd varied from 1.0 to 1.2 times the Rankine active earth pressure. The curve connecting the points where max~mm~ tensile stress occurred in the reinforcing ties did not coincide with the theoretical Rankine failure surface. 785188 DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OF A SLURRY TRENCH WALL NEXT TO FOUND~IONS Rosenberg, P; St Arnaudj G; Journeaux, N L Can Geotech J, VI4, N3, Aug 1977, P324-3"39 Describes a system to retain the sides of a 30-ft deep cut in glacial till immediately ~dJacent to the heavily loaded foundations of historically I m ~ s ~ n t ~ settlement sensitive str~ctt~res. FOundation loads imposed by these

~ructures vary from 5.5 to 6.5 ton~sq ft at a del~ah Qf 5ft below g r ~ level. The slurry trench, u~ to 50ft in delfah, approached to within 8ft Of these foundations. Excavation was in two stages with tiebacks holding the wall at each level. The slurry trench arA surrounding structures were instrumented using settlement points, crack movement devices, horizontal measurement points, Inclinometers, and load cells. The soil investigation and design methods adopted are described.

Chapus, R P Can Geotech J, Vl4, N3, Aug 1977, P389-398 Methods currently available to check the internal stability Of reinforced earth retaining walls are reviewed and compared with two groups of experimental results obtained by model tests. The results do not agree with the theoretical predictions. A new design method is suggested which makes use of a cohesion term to represent the soil-ties interaction, and takes into consideration the fact that reinforced earth is a eomposite material. This new method shows agreement with experimental results.
