T h r o u g h o u t the e m p h a s i s is on p r o v i d i n g p h y s i c a l u n d e r s t a n d i n g and quantitative a r g u m e n t s a r e only u s e d w h e r e they e n h a n c e such a l m s . Thus although the book is g e n e r a l l y q u a l i t a t i v e r a t h e r than quantitative it does not fall into the t r a p of b e i n g s u p e r f i c i a l . The f i r s t p a r t of the book d e a l s with the f u n d a m e n t a l s of the s u b j e c t such as m e c h a n i s m s of f r i c t i o n and l u b r i c a t i o n and the types and p r o p e r t i e s of l u b r i c a n t s . The topic of w e a r , c e r t a i n l y the m o s t expensive, and t h e r e f o r e significant, f e a t u r e of t r i b o l o g i c a l s i t u a t i o n s is d e a l t with in the final c h a p t e r . The a u t h o r a d m i t s the l e s s developed s t a t e of u n d e r s t a n d i n g in t h i s field but d e s c r i b e s the m o s t i m p o r t a n t m e c h a n i s m s of w e a r and shows that i n c r e a s e d h a r d n e s s is not the u n i v e r s a l p a n a c e a that we often i m a g i n e . On the whole t h i s is an e x c e l l e n t book for i t s p u r p o s e and should be e x t e n s i v e l y u s e d by e n g i n e e r i n g d e s i g n e r s and o t h e r s s e e k i n g a lucid r e a d y r e f e r e n c e to the m o s t i m p o r t a n t t r i b o l o g i c a l p r i n c p i l e s and a p p l i c a t i o n s . It was not w r i t t e n f o r the g e n e r a l i t y of s t u d e n t s in m e c h a n i c a l e n g i n e e r i n g , but will p r o v e to be a m o s t useful tool f o r t h o s e with an e s p e c i a l i n t e r e s t in t r i b o l o g y . The t h e o r y c o v e r e d in t h i s volume i s not u n n e c e s s a r i l y t o r tuous and will not d e t e r t h o s e e n g i n e e r s with a few d e c a d e s of p r a c t i c a l e x p e r i e n c e b e h i n d t h e m . The description of p r a c t i c a l s y s t e m s i s well laid out and w r i t t e n in a p l e a s a n t and r e a d a b l e s t y l e . The book h a s been e x c e l l e n t l y t r a n s l a t e d s o a s to l e a v e no t r a c e of its f o r e i g n o r i g i n in the text. The work does, in fact, c o v e r the s u b s t a n c e and m a t e r i a l d e s c r i b e d by the title. Had the c o v e r a g e b e e n m o r e e x h a u s t i v e , the book would h a v e b e e n l e s s r e a d a b l e and, no doubt, m o r e e x p e n s i v e . In any event, each chapter is t e r m i n a t e d by a s c o m p r e h e n s i v e a l i s t of r e f e r e n c e s a s the r e a d e r i s e v e r likely to need. Most of the references relate to p a p e r s p u b l i s h e d in the text which are r e a d i l y a v a i l a b l e .
