Right-angle display tubes Following the introduction of their high-resolution 110 picture tubes, Philips has launched a range of 230 and 305 ram, 90 ° narrow-neck tubes. The improved sharpness of these new tubes makes them suitable for 1 000 to 2 000 character displays for use in word processors, small business computers and stand-alone monitors. O
.
The tubes have a neck diameter of 20 mm, and give a resolution of approximately 1 300 lines - 5 0 % higher than the previous models, according to Philips. There is a choice of four different phosphor layers, and optional anti-reflective treatments are also available.

Plasma a c and d c
benefits
A gas plasma display from Burroughs claims to combine the benefits of a c panels - high brightness, inherent memory and long character line with the simpler drive electronics of d c panels. The first displays using this technique will offer five lines of 80 characters and 25 lines of 80 characters. A 13-line display will follow.
Single layer displays are available for either transmissive of reflective viewing, and double layer types offer viewing in up to three colours. Another range of colour LCDs is also available, using twisted nematic fluids with a dichroic front polarizer. This arrangement offers two-colour viewing with, for example, red digits on a blue background or vice versa.

Digital display module Vector graphics and alphanumerics can be produced on a 150 mm diagonal CRT in response to digital commands from an external processor using a digital display module from HewlettPackard. Typical applications for the compact high-performance display module are in spectrum and network analysers, waveform analysers, curve tracers, digital storage oscilloscopes and Fourier analysers, and in any
microprocessor-based equipment producing comPlex, rapidly changing graphics information. The 2048 x 2048 addressable resolution provides high-resolution graphics with high positional discrimination on the CRT. Picture quality is enhanced by the unit's constant writing speed which ensures a uniformly bright display. An optional word vector memory saves user memory and eliminates refresh requirements by the user processor. Additional display flexibility is assured by three programmable intensities, plus blank or off, four programmable line types and four programmable writing speeds. A programmable automatic Sx increment enables users to conserve memory and to draw complex graphs easily with less data transfer. The circuitry and electrostatic deflection CRT use less than 25 W average power for increased reliability.

Designer colours Liquid crystal displays offering the designer a wide choice of colour combinations for both digit segments and background are available from Hamlin. The displays with high contrast, wide viewing angles and high reliability, are of the negative guest-host dichroic type, using a liquid crystal fluid as the host and a dichroic dye as the guest.
