t has been well said that “Every Change is a Challenge to Become Who We Really Are.” That has been our experience over the past several months as the Foundation Board has begun the process of collaboratively designing a bold and innovative plan to ensure a strong William N. Crabtree, PhD, SCT(ASCP) future for the ASC Foundation. At our recent retreat, we began the process of developing the framework for new initiatives and broadening our scope of fundraising activities, programs and services. One development you will notice now is a new logo that gives our Foundation a separate but shared identity with our Society. In the report below, and elsewhere in this special Bulletin issue devoted to our Foundation, you can find details of some of our recent activities and brief summaries of programs and services. Additionally, you will find a section where you can meet your Foundation Board members. We are always looking for new ideas to help us serve our Society better, so don’t to share with us any thoughts or ideas you might have. “Designing FIGHTING Chesitate ANCER Together” includes YOU! SAVING LIVES On April 5, 2014, the Foundation Board held a retreat in Chicago, Illinois. The purpose Mary R. Schwartz, MD

Fundraising is a relationship over time. Like any other relationship, there must be trust, commitment, growth, common purpose, and mutually rewarding outcomes.

of the Retreat was to bring together Foundation Board Members and other interested individuals to assess the current state of the ASC Foundation and to design a road map to fundraising success. The Retreat participants reviewed the current Foundation, how it is perceived by the ASC members, and how it should be changed for the future. From the discussions, an action plan was developed with key issues identified. The Foundation Board has assigned a Team Leader and Team Members to begin working on these key issues. A Prioritization Chart/ Matrix was developed to assist in guiding the Foundation Board members as they carry out their action steps. With the help of over 1,200 supporters, including ASC members, leadership, and industry friends, the ASC Foundation has raised over $700,000 to date. This generosity underscores the trust donors have in the ASC’s ability to support innovation that will advance the field of cytopathology and cancer detection, education to bring these advances into the hands of practitioners, and advocacy on behalf of patients and the profession. Recently, two long standing supporters of the ASC Foundation have made generous donations this year. Hologic donated $50,000, the largest gift the Society has received to date this year, and BD Diagnostics has contributed $15,000 as well. Roche Diagnostics is another noteworthy corporate partner that supports the Foundation regularly. Special recognition goes to those individuals in our Papanicolaou Clubs. These individuals have given over $25,000 to the ASC Foundation since its inception. Platinum Papanicolaou Club William B. Zeiler, MD Golden Papanicolaou Club R. Marshall Austin, MD, PhD

The primary function of the ASC Foundation is to fund the Society’s programs and expand its endowment to assure fiduciary responsibilities to the mission, membership and the public, as it insures the Society’s financial stability. Since its inception in 2002, we have provided the following scholarships and grants: • Travel scholarships to over 50 cytotechnologists and 50 cytopathology fellows or pathology residents to attend the ASC Annual Scientific Meeting. • Over $285,000 in cytopathology research grants have been granted by the ASC Foundation to support innovative work that advances our profession and improves patient care. • The ASC Foundation’s Patient Advocacy Grant, which has enabled our members to bring their talents to benefit the underserved globally, including Peru, Haiti and India, as well as in the United States. Fundraising is a relationship over time. Like any other relationship, there must be trust, commitment, growth, common purpose, and mutually rewarding outcomes. Philanthropy is not a “program” or a “project” but a practical expression of a philosophy that assures the achievement of a universal health care mission. All donations to the ASC Foundation are tax deductible and a Tax Receipt will be issued immediately upon receipt of your donation. Every gift, little or large, helps us meet our Society’s missions, and every gift, no matter the size, is stretched to its fullest potential. We want to thank all of our contributors for their partnership in Fighting Cancer, Saving Lives.
