Book Review

Developments in Reinforced Plastics--5. Edited by G. Pritchard, 1986. Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, London. Price: £37.00. Continuing a fine tradition this volume considers fabrication and processing aspects of composite materials. It forms a logical progression from earlier volumes in this series which addressed such areas as resin matrixes, laminate properties, etc. As the title implies, it is an attempt to put into perspective recent advances in the manufacture of composite structures and in particular likely developments in the foreseeable future. Readers will quickly gather that the book looks to the future rather than summarising the past. It is not intended as a reference book for today's processing problems. Broadly speaking each of the six chapters, each written by a specialist in the field, shows how scientific advances are helping to monitor and control the processing of matrix resins, mainly crosslinkable polymers. The importance of accurate and reliable instrumentation is repeatedly stressed along with the rheology of the materials. In summary, there is little doubt that 'processing and fabrication' are key areas which are presently receiving considerable attention worldwide. Consequently, a book of this nature is indeed timely and will contribute to knowledge. I. H. Marshall
