This comprehensive book covers a broad range of minimally invasive surgical techniques. Purpose: The purpose is to present an up-to-date monograph on the advances in minimally invasive surgery. Audience: Practicing surgeons and residents training in surgery are the intended audience. Features: The book’s 42 chapters are grouped into broad sections on surgical principles and fundamental surgical techniques; upper GI surgery; surgery on the liver and pancreas; lower GI surgery; and retroperitoneal organ surgery. The first section on principles and techniques is a broad discussion about this rapidly evolving specialty, the different techniques it employs, the important physiologic considerations specific to minimally invasive surgery, and its future directions. Organ-specific discussions of minimally invasive procedures follow. The laparoscopic anatomy is displayed, the particular techniques and the reconstruction, if required, are discussed, and the use of drains, etc, is included. This is followed by a discussion of results from published studies. Each chapter has many line drawings and color photographs demonstrating anatomy, radiographs, and occasional tables. Where appropriate, general guidelines, called Rules of Thumb, are given. Assessment: This is a well constructed book with beautiful hand drawings in black-and-white and color as well as excellent pictures and operative photographs. The content of the tables is well thought out and useful to the surgeon. The procedures are particularly well described and presented in a very logical, educational, and useful way. The first part of the book is exceptionally helpful, relating important laparoscopic-related physiology and what the resident and surgeon should know. The book is an excellent compendium of laparoscopic procedures. It should be reviewed by every resident with an interest in minimally invasive surgery as well as by any surgeon trying to keep his or her skills at the peak. I highly recommend it. Publication of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Description: Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1991, much has changed in the neurosurgical management of intracranial tumors, including the use of sophisticated neuronavigation modalities and neuroendoscopy. This updated edition was not only necessary but expected by the neurosurgical community. Purpose: The purpose is to update neurosurgeons and trainees in the techniques and approaches to brain tumors. The book remains focused on the incorporation of new technology into the operative arsenal. Audience: Neurosurgeons are the target audience. The authors are well known experts in the field of surgical neuro-oncology. Features: This well organized book directs the reader from craniotomies to different approaches for specific cerebral, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve neoplasms. An overview of the most common skull base approaches is elegantly presented in the last few chapters. As peculiar to this neurosurgical series, personal clinical insight is offered in addition to the art work and well written text. Some 80 authors contribute the 36 chapters in this book. Assessment: This is a superb work on the neurosurgical management of central nervous system neoplasms. I highly recommend it for all neurosurgical libraries, since it is a reference for most neurosurgeons and trainees. Purpose: The purpose is to present an updated overview of the modern methods used in the diagnosis and management of the diabetic foot and limb salvage. The authors have accomplished this goal in a concise and instructive manner. Audience: This book is principally aimed at trainees and practicing vascular and podiatric surgeons who will undoubtedly encounter an increasing volume of diabetic patients. Features: The topics vary from diabetic neuropathy to operative management of foot infections to vein patch construction. There is also a very relevant and timely chapter on infrainguinal angioplasty in diabetics. The book does an

excellent job of addressing many important concepts by including ample diagrams and images. Many of these topics are very important to the everyday practicing surgeon considering the sheer volume of diabetic patients one encounters. Assessment: I enjoyed this book very much. It fills a very important knowledge gap in the management of a large segment of a typical vascular surgeon’s patient load. Most other books dedicate merely a single page to this vital topic. This book has been needed for many years and will serve as a valuable reference because it covers all aspects of the topic excellently. It should be required reading for all vascular surgeons dedicated to the concept and practice of limb salvage.
