AS 1’Ht title implres this monograph describes the principle of ultrasonic diagnostic techniques and the application in obstetrical and gynecological investigations. The manuscript 1s essentially a descriptive review of the subject as practised in the late 1960’s. The text is illustrated with echograms reproduced primarily from American and English publications of that vintage and only occasronally are Russian echo&rams utilized. These are mostly of rather poor quality and their information content is further

interest. It covers almost the entire field of diagnostic ultrasound B-scanning. The author’s motto (avec les Ultrasons, on peut tout faire) is taken quite literally. so that everything from the head to the pelvis is covered except ophthalmology. Both compound contact (K&z) and real time linear (Siemens) scanners are employed by the authors. Thus the authors escape from the parochialism of some workers who are familiar with only one type of equipment. and they are able to indicate the advantages and disadvantages as well as the complementary use of the different types of equipment. The book is not meant to be a text book of Ultrasound. but rather an atlas with as many reproductions as possible. The authors’ aim is to give an overall view of the wide application of Ultrasound. A clear and concise French text accompanies the reproductions. The captions are in both

French and English. This allows the English speaking reader with no knowledge of the French language to make use of the book to a certain extent. The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the physics and techniques. This part contains three chapters: I A short introduction to the physics of Ultrasound. 2 In the second chapter the authors describe the two types ofequipment used in their laboratory first, theconventronal sector scanner: second, a real time machine (Vidoson Siemens). The advantages and limitation of each machine are discussed succinctly. 3 The third chapter deals with imaging and artifacts. The second part of the book is the clinical atlas. It covers all the fields of application of Ultrasound short of echocardiography, although the authors discuss in one chapter
