Prior to failure under a substantial surcharge loading, the measured lateral earth pressure was maximum at the middle third of the wall amd varied from 1.0 to 1.2 times the Rankine active earth pressure. Chapus, R P Can Geotech J, Vl4, N3, Aug 1977, P389-398 Methods currently available to check the internal stability Of reinforced earth retaining walls are reviewed and compared with two groups of experimental results obtained by model tests. The results do not agree with the theoretical predictions. A new design method is suggested which makes use of a cohesion term to represent the soil-ties interaction, and takes into consideration the fact that reinforced earth is a eomposite material. This new method shows agreement with experimental results.
