Cover Story Digest I found the experience of creating the 2016 cover images for The Lancet Respiratory Medicine very rewarding, and I wanted to create an image for the December issue that spanned the diverse range of research covered throughout the year.

I am interested in exploring the ways in which we read and absorb information. As a collaborator on the Life of Breath project I read about the breath from a range of academic perspectives ranging from philosophy, history, literature, anthropology, to biomedicine. When I read an article I tend to remember a few key fragments, which I then weave together with other experiences I have gleaned from related research. I decided to use this process of deconstruction and reconstruction of information to highlight the rich array of research showcased by The Lancet Respiratory Medicine in 2016. I dissected (with a scalpel) articles line-by-line from each issue of the journal. Each line was then cut into 5 cm strands. Each of these strands was threaded onto a length of book binding linen and knitted into a dense and tactile sculptural piece, which I have called Digest. Each stitch contains a whole line of an article, so a range of content spanning many topics is held together in the same place. The time-intensive nature of this craft-based piece allowed me to reflect on articles that I had read over the year.
