Book review Digestive physiology of pigs J.E. Lindberg, B. Ogle (Eds.), CABI Publishing, UK, 448 p., £35.00, Hardcover, ISBN 0-85199-378-8 This book is a compilation of papers presented at the 8th Symposium on Digestive Physiology in Pigs, held at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, in June 2000. It contains a total of 107 proceedings, which were attributed to the following topics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Gut development and function (15 papers) The gastrointestinal immune system (three papers) Nutrient absorption and utilization by the gut (seven papers) Digestive processes (43 papers) Eco-nutrition and health maintenance (20 papers) Free communications (19 papers) Concluding remarks

The division of the papers into these topics re¯ects the fact that the gastrointestinal tract is a complex system that has a number of different functions. It is the site for interaction between feed and the body, while the main function is digestion and absorption of nutrients. Special emphasis is drawn to the health and well being of the pig. The interplay between the different functions is carefully modulated by a variety of direct and indirect mechanisms determining the ability of the gastrointestinal tract to withstand damage. Luminal factors are recognized to have direct or indirect effects on the gastrointestinal tract and were intensively discussed. A broad ®eld dealt with factors in¯uencing gut maturation and function in prenatal and postnatal pigs as well as the gastrointestinal immune system and its implications for health maintenance. Further, some papers deal with ¯uxes at the intestinal level as well as nutrient utilization and metabolism by the gastrointestinal tract, in addition to dietary and animal-related factors affecting digestion and digestive secretions. Finally, the in¯uence of the gut micro¯ora on the digestive processes, the in¯uence of nutrition on the gut micro¯ora and the role of the gut micro¯ora in the prevention of diseases are addressed. In summary, the various chapters give an excellent overview of the contemporary knowledge of digestive physiology in pigs and can be regarded as solid fundamentals for scientists and research workers for their goal to optimize the nutrition of pigs and to prevent diet related gastrointestinal disturbances.
