The new PL6 lip seals from Race-Tec NAK provide significant friction reduction for Formula One cars.
Crankshaft friction can be reduced by 80% The latest generation of PL6 seal from Race-Tec NAK is said to provide effective sealing over a wide speed range, with very low load and significantly reduced friction. Designed to meet the requirements of the 2005 Formula One regulations, the seals have been tested under representative engine operating conditions. The seals comfortably exceeded the need to survive two race weekends. The seals have also been tested for 170 hours for GT endurance racing engines with satisfactory results. Development of the seals including computer modelling has contributed to the reduction in friction. The PL6 has a PTFE lip that is able to operate at speeds up to 20 000 rev/min and with a high engine vacuum. It has been tested up to 0.85 bar. The seals, which are available as single or dual lip designs, are manufactured in a range of special materials. In addition to PTFE for the seal lips, the casings may be in aluminum or titanium. Sealing Technology April 2005
Dimensionally stable gasket reduces risk of contamination A new pre-formed gasket from Garlock Sealing Technologies is intended to provide compatibility for all commonly used bio-pharmaceutical and food sector process chemicals, and reduce problems of progressive extrusion into the product stream. Gylon Bio-Pro gaskets, designed for the hygienic tri-clamp fittings, are dimensionally stable and prestressed to a controlled compression during manufacture. The purpose of this is to avoid the requirement for regular re-tightening that occurs with many gasket types due to creep of the plastic during sterilization cycles. This re-tightening can progressively extrude the gasket into the pipe bore, causing an increased risk of contamination. The wide temper-
Gland packing shows its pedigree James Walker Fluograf gland packing now shows that it is made from 100% GFO fiber produced by WL Gore & Associates. James Walker is the only UK manufacturer permitted to print this claim on its product. GFO fiber combines the benefits of ePTFE, graphite and high temperature lubricants, with heat transfer and lubricant components forming an integral part of the fiber. Strikes affect two US seal manufacturers Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers were involved in a strike over contract negotiations at Garlock in Palmyra, New York, at the end of January. Garlock and parent company EnPro are looking to improve the productivity of the 100 year-old plant. A six-month deal has been negotiated, after which EnPro will decide whether to relocate production. New York State has offered a $2.2m grant towards the $30m required to update the plant. A strike also hurt Kaydon profits, according to its annual report. Kaydon’s president and chief executive officer, Brian P. Campbell, says fourth-quarter numbers were undercut by a strike at its Baltimore, Maryland sealing products factory. The work stoppage, which began in December, cost the division $2.8m in sales. The dispute was settled in January. ature and compatibility range also avoid gasket changes when introducing different process chemicals. The gaskets comply with the requirements of FDA and USP class VI, toxicity, and are recommended for use between 5°C and 180°C. Tri-clamp gaskets manufactured by Garlock from Gylon Bio-Pro material provide a reduced risk of extrusion into the pipe bore as regular tightening requirements are reduced.
All-in-one safety relief valve seal provides cost savings A safety valve manufacturer has worked with Busak+Shamban to produce a new design that will work in a wide range of refrigerants and lubricating oils. An important requirement was the ability to work with the wide range of fluids. Applying a perfluoroelastomer to the existing design would have proved too costly. But, by using a revised design with perfluoroelastomer bonded to the metal piston, an acceptable solution with reduced assembly costs was achieved. The design has proved successful, and is being used in truck refrigeration units. Contact: Busak+Shamban GmbH & Co, Handwerkstraße 5–7, D-70565 Stuttgart, Germany.
