Protocol, a new colony counter from Synoptics Ltd, is set to cut the workload for busy microbiologists by reducing the time required to count plates by up to 80%. [;sing innovative image analysis technology, Protocol is packed with features to simplify counting and recording of results. Protocol also features control software that is designed for microbiologists, producing results in the appropriate formats. Dilution series, and plates

produced using spiral plating techniques, can be readily accomodated. Resuhs are acquired, stored and reported in formats compliant with Good Laboratory Practice. The key to the performance of Protocol is a method developed for the automatic detection of colonies. This system eliminates problems due to unevenly poured plates and variations in background density between different plates in batch. This brings a high level of consistency to the measured results, by eliminating operator set-up procedures. Protocol is equally at home with any type of media, including agarose gels, membrane filters, as well as opaque and transparent agars. It will count bacteria, cells, plaques and can even handle fluorescing bacteria or nuclei. Circle number 1 on reader response card.

Order DNA direct on the web Scandinavian Gene Synthesis (SGS) is a manufacturer of synthetic DNA. Its ordering service has recently been enhanced with the introduction of a new on-line facility. This allows orders to be placed for specific sequence requirements with a choice of purity, scale of synthesis and specific modifications. A full list of modifications and prices is included on the site, from which literature about the company and its products can also be requested. SGS can ship most orders within 48 hours in a highly stable lyophilized form or in an aqeous solution with full documentation. Sequence analysis tool DNASTAR has announced the release of GeneQuest, a tool for comprehensive analysis, organisation and display of sequence information. The newest addition to the DNASTAR universe of desktop products offers a user-friendly graphical interface to locate features of a sequence, perform BLAST searches, and display features at scales from a whole chromosome down to the single nucleotide. The software finds ORFs, stops and starts, and identifies potential coding regions using Borodovsky's Markov method. GeneQuest is available as a standalone product or as a module of the comprehensive Lasergene system, available for Windows 95, NT and Macintosh platforms. Circle number 5 on reader response card.

A new SPA-based screening assay, that permits the direct measurement of intracellular and/or total cyclic AMP (cAMP) in samples, has been launched by Amersham Life Science. Measuring cAMP levels will provide understanding of the physiology and pathology of many disease states. By using novel, patented cell lysis reagents, the new BiotrakTM cAMP Direct System eliminates the lengthy extraction steps found in existing assays. Simply add lysis reagents to cells, leave for 5 minutes and perform the assay. All steps can be carried out in a single well of a 96-well microplate.
Micromass have recently introduced their second generation LC T O F technology product I_,CTTM. Based on Micromass' proven orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight technology, the L C T TM is now refined into a benchtop life science workstation. Designed to address challenges in the pharmaceutical, proteome and biotechnology sectors, L C T T M provides both molecular weight and comprehensive structural information for total characterisation. This initiative from Micromass delivers senstivity, selectivity and speed of analysis.
