cover Over the crown is often less ~ lOre, the rock is schist or gneiss chsracterised by Jointing, steeply dipping shear zones a m a tendency for wedge instability. Tunnelli~g and s u p e r techniques ere reviewed, including rock bolt amd arch installation. Results fr~n measurements of rock a~d lining displacements during construction ere discussed in detail.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR LARGE UNDERGROUND TRIAL OPENINGS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING Sharp, J C; Richards, L; Byrne, J Proc International Symposium on Field Measurements in Rock Mechanics, Zurich, 4-6 April 1977, V2, P587-609. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkmm, 1977 An overview which considers inatrt~nentation lay~ out, ap~ro~iate types of measurement and an appraisal of the characteristics of selected instrmnents for the measurements required. A trial excavation at the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme is described by way of illustration.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1977 Describes the design and installation of the precision diastimeter which measures distance by a comparison of incaming ar~ outgoing beams of polarised light. 793091 CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMON APPLICATION OF FIELD MEASURH~ENTS A~D THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD Dolezalova, M ~roc International Symposium on Field Measurements in Rock Mechanics, Zurich, 4-6 April 1977, V2, P873-888. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1977 Reports the use of finite element analysis in: i) evaluation of stress relief p~ocedures in a section of a subway, 2) design of the m c h i n e roc~ for an urzl.ergrom~d power plant, 3 ) determining potential overburden subsidence during subway station construction. 793092 EFFECT OF GEOLOGY AND CONSTRUCTION ON BEHAVIOUR OF A LARGE, SHALLOW, UNDERGROUND OPENING IN ROCK Mahar, J W Ph D thesis, Illinois Univ, Urbar~-Champaign, 1977, 333P Reports a study carried out during construction of the Dupont Circle Station in the Washir~ton, DC, Metro, to relate measured rock movements in the top heading of the opening to geologic and construction conditions. The largest movements were associated with blocky rock bounded by shear zones ar~ continuous Joints amd occurred when the vertical side walls had i~adequate support. Construction procedures, particularly supplemental rockbolt support, are reviewed and total rock displacements given. Criteria fc~ detecting potentially unstable conditions were developed.
