The general standard of the papers, all of which were independently refereed, is high. Although a wide range of topics are dealt with, the coverage is not comprehensive, but the publication should be valuable to all those working in this field.

Price: $34-75. This book evaluates the global consequences of the dispersal of trace elements originally mined from localised deposits. Most attention is paid to contamination of the soil, but there is some account of the problem as it affects the atmosphere and the hydrosphere. The final chapter deals with the prevention of environmental pollution.

Each year the list of projects known to the clearing house of the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research in Cancer grows. The directory for 1977 lists 905 projects in 70 countries, and the 1978 edition increases the number to 1025 projects from the same 70 countries.
