their co-operation is only partly understood. The functional role of NPY in the peripheral circulation is probably not related exclusively to sympathetic neuratransmission.

Volume 1 deals with psychaand neuro-pharmacology, volume 2 with haemodynamics, hormones and inflammation, and volume 3 with pharmacological methods, chemotherapy. and receptors Thus an appreciable area of pharmacology is covered. background to the topic; in same instances the physiological and biochemical aspects are cansidered too. The organization of the volumes as a whole, the choice of the various chapters as well as the selection of authors far the various contributions is well done. Taking into account the wide spread of topics, the presentations are quite homogeneous in level and depth. There is a good baiance in the iayout and figures as a rule are welt chosen. Whet is most important, the material presented is on the whole of goad to high quality. To your reviewer, an old-timer in the field, a good deal of the reading gave a not unpleasant d&&-vu, sometimes flash-back sensation. For the youngsters and newtamers it probably will be a more ‘Ah-ha’ or ‘Did it happen that way?’ reaction. What becomes clear, if it was not evident already, pharma-

has been perspectives

gained thus opening to a still mare ration-

al approach in drug development and application. These volumes will find few readers but many users. They are a valuable and trustworthy source of information, in particular to those involved in teaching and instruction in pharmacology, and possibly even physiology and biochemistry. Whilst I suggest that only a few individuals will buy these books far personal Use, libraries of teaching and research institutes for pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology as well as industrial laboratories involved in drug development will find them indispensable.
