Distinguished dentists * Afro-Americans in dentistry: se quence and consequence of events

C. O. Dummett, DDS, and Lois Doyle Dummett, BM 144 pages with illustrations. Index. PO Box 77006, Los Angeles, 90007, Pub lished by the authors. This 144-page paperback is dedi cated to three distinguished Ameri can dentists: Robert Tanner Freeman, Charles Edwin Bentley, and David Arthur Ferguson. Each was a pioneer in the saga of Afro-Americans in den tistry. The book chronologizes the events relative to the activities of black den tists and “provides a long perspec tive on their enduring quest for their rightful place in American den tistry.” The book tabulates signifi cant events pertaining to AfroAmericans in dentistry into four gen eral periods: phase A, 1740 to 1915; phase B, 1916 to 1935; phase C, 1936 to 1957; and phase D, 1958 to 1975. The authors have been concerned with demonstrating the gradual ad vancement of the Afro-American in the dental profession from “slave status—forbidden by law from even learning to read and write—to accep tance as a legitimate member of a re spected profession. .. The chronology spans nearly 236

years and concludes that, “the black American has seized those opportu nities which were available to im prove his status.” Data are authenti cated from approximately 115 re ference sources. Approximately 120 persons are cited in the index. When the complete story of the achievements of black Americans in the field of dentistry is written, this book will be an invaluable reference source. Theodore E. ANNOTATIONS The following annotations have been prepared by the staff. The purpose of these annotations is to provide immediate, brief descriptions of new publications. ‘ Handbook of clinical dental auxil iary practice, ed 2

Francis A. Castano, DDS, MBA; Betsey A. Alden, RDH, BS, MEd (eds.) 290 pages with illustrations. Index. $15.75. Philadelphia, J. B. Lippincott Co., 1980. Three chapters have been added and revisions have been made to update the second edition of this handbook. The editors explain that, since 1973 and the first appearance of the book, the role of the dental auxiliary has evolved. To ensure that the new edi tion would accurately reflect the ad vances in research and clinical prac tice, the state-of-the-art has been re evaluated. However, the book’s ob jective is the same—to provide some thing for everybody rather than ev erything for somebody. It is intended

as a supplement to basic textbooks and as a stimulus for further reading and learning. ‘ Sedation, local and general anes thesia in dentistry, ed 3

Niels Bjom Jorgensen, DDS; Jess Hayden, Jr., DMD, PhD (eds.) 299 pages with illustrations. Index. $27.00. Philadelphia, Lea & Febiger, 1980. In the title of the second edition, the word “sedation” was aptly substi tuted for “premedication” and was also used for clarification in place of the word “analgesia.” However, semantics are not the main basis of revision for the third edition. Addi tions to the text and appendixes have been made because of: the increasing medicolegal ramifications of local or systemic complications related to the injection of potent local anesthetics; the increased use of drugs with psychopharmacological properties and concern for drug-related compli cations, interactions, and toxicity; and the widespread use by dentists of inhalation and parenteral sedation. ‘ Waxing manual: tooth to tooth occlusion, ed 2

R. James Thomley, DDS; Gary C. Hunt, DMD 95 pages with illustrations. $25.00. San Mateo, Calif, Harmony-O-Press, 1980. This ring-bound manual is intended to be used as a visual aid by the operator in the laboratory. A drop wax technique based on the works of Payne and Thomas is featured. Illus trations on opposing pages of the spi ral leaf manual are intended to simu late articulated maxillary and man dibular teeth. The authors have at tempted to keep the manual brief for ready reference at the laboratory bench and they do not hesitate to JADA, Vol. 100, May 1980 ■ 715

New York, McGraw-Hill Book Co., 1979

Subtitled, A common sense guide to keeping more of the money you earn, this book is divided into two main sections— conservative and high-risk tax shelters. A variety of tax shelters are described, and IRS forms are used as illustrations. The book, the author explains, is intended for middle income people—average pro fessional or business people success ful in their own fields but who are not accountants or tax lawyers. ‘ Pathways of the pulp, ed 2 Stephen Cohen, MA, DDS; Richard C. Although the chapters of this second edition have been updated by the 33 contributors and two editors, the book’s objective has not changed—to present endodontics as it is under stood and practiced today. Essen tially, there are four parts to the book: the art of endodontics, the science of endodontics, related chemical top ics, and the history and philosophy of endodontics. Each of the 24 chap ters in the first three parts is followed by a self-assessment quiz so that readers may test their comprehen sion and retention. Many half-tone photographs and two-color plates highlight the text.
