DONALDSON TO ADD FILTRATION PRODUCTION LINE Donaldson Inc is to add a second production line at its Cresco, Iowa manufacturing facility to produce its PowerCore filtration technology used in automotive, truck and off-road applications. To date, the Cresco facility has manufactured the 1.2 million PowerCore filters the company has sold, and the new line, due for completion in August 2004, will result in total PowerCore production capacity of an estimated 1.5 million filters per year. The facility also produces axial seal, radial seal and Vpack air filters, employing approximately 400 workers. “After considering several locations for this project, Donaldson has determined that the plant in Cresco is the right place for the PowerCore line,” said Cary Olson, general manager of air filtration, in a statement. “A number of factors led to this decision including the support of the Iowa Department of Economic Development, the Howard County Economic Development Agency and the Cresco Industrial Development Corporation.”
ALFA LAVAL, SARTORIUS EXTEND BEER ALLIANCE Alfa Laval has extended its alliance with the Sartorius Group; it has received the exclusive rights to sell Sartorius’s membranes and membrane systems for crossflow filtration and sterile filtration of beer, as well as dead end filtration in breweries. As part of the alliance Sartorius will supply the membrane filter elements; contribute know-how for the design and production of complete membrane filter systems;
as well as supply key engineering and sales personnel in the largest markets like China and Japan. According to the companies, the new crossflow system, designed for beer filtration, eliminates the problems associated with diatomaceous earth. Instead, the crossflow system uses porous membranes produced by Sartorius, ensuring a continuous and efficient operation, as well as minimum product loss. “The extended alliance is proof of the long-term nature of the commitment from both Alfa Laval’s and Sartorius’s side,” said Ulf Granstrand, Alfa Laval’s executive vice president and head of the process technology division. “It will increase our possibilities to develop the technology and market presence within beer filtration technology even further.”
LYDALL, AHLSTROM IN ENGINE AGREEMENT Ahlstrom Corp and Lydall Inc, through their respective US-based subsidiary companies, have announced a strategic alliance. The companies say the cooperation will better serve the liquid engine filtration market in North America with a new technology and product offering – Lydall’s wetlaid microglass media known as LyPore XL. Ahlstrom has a strong business of liquid engine filtration products in North America, and this complements Lydall’s wetlaid microglass products for challenging filtration and separation applications. According to a statement released by the companies, the partnership offers “promising growth opportunities for the Lydall microglass product platform in North America.”
And Scott Murdock, vice president and general manager, North America engine filtration, added that the partnership is a bonus for both companies. “In addition to Ahlstrom’s traditional range of cellulose and syntheticbased engine filtration media, the integration of Lydall’s microglass media and engineered composites now provides a complete range of high-performance products for North American liquid filtration customers from one source.” a statement by the company say that the alliance positions the companies as leading suppliers to high value-added applications in the segment.
MYKROLIS BUYS SEMICONDUCTOR COMPONENT MAKER Mykrolis has acquired the business and assets of Californian Bentec Scientific LLC, a privately held manufacturer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based components used in semiconductor manufacturing. The move is a logical step for Mykrolis, already an exclusive worldwide distributor of Bentec’s products, which are currently sold by the company under the Planarcore brand name. The products are used in post-CMP (chemical mechanical planarisation) and substrate cleaning, critical parts of the manufacturing process for advanced semiconductors and microelectronics; Mykrolis is already a leading supplier of CMP consumable filtration products, which are used to filter defect-causing particles from slurries in the CMP process. This is an increasingly favoured means of planarising the metal and dielectric layers of semiconductors with line widths of 0.18 (mu)m or less, says Mykrolis.
