ABS WINS FRENCH CONTRACT Finnish-based paper company UPM/Kymmene is expanding its activities in France. The subsidiary UPM/ Chapelles Darblay is to increase its deinking capacity from 200 000 t/a to 350 000 t/a, by building a third deinking line at the mill in, Grand Couronne. ABS pumps and agitators will be installed. After completion of the new line, the mill will use 100 per cent deinked waste paper to produce newsprint. The investment cost will be FFr524 million. DOUBLE FIRST FOR WEIR Weir Pumps is to supply the mechanical package of the world's first 3.5 MW variable speed drive descaling pumpset. The contract was awarded by Danieli United for Nucor Steel's new Plate Mill in Hertford County, North Carolina, and is Weir's first success in the US domestic steel market. Dale Robertson, metals industry specialist with Weir Pumps, said: "This is a major breakthrough and by installing variable speed descale pumps, instead of conventional fixed speed units, energy costs are significantly reduced. The maintenance of the pumps is also drastically reduced and this should increase mill productivity and profits due to less down-time." Descaling is the most arduous pumping application in the world and high pressure pumps are used to remove the scale which forms on the surface of the steel slab during the manufacturing process. Descaling technology supplied by Weir helps to produce over 100 000 tonnes of strip steel per day worldwide.
