F O C U S BASF, Petronas lay foundation stone for aroma ingredients complex BASF SE is erecting its first aroma materials complex outside Germany to meet rising demand in APAC. The plant will be built with Petronas at Gebeng near Kuantan, Malaysia [see also Focus on Surfactants, Jul 2013]. The 60:40 joint venture BASF Petronas Chemicals has now laid the foundation stone for the complex, which is expected to cost Ringgit 1.5 bn (c $500 M) and create around 120 jobs. An engineering, procurement and construction management contract has been awarded to USbased Fluor Corp. The first units could go on stream in 2016, producing 30,000 tonnes/y of citral, 9000 tonnes/y of L-menthol and 8000 tonnes/y of citronellol. The products are used mainly in home and personal care products and fine fragrances, as well as in the food industry and in pharmaceutical applications. Avon removes triclosan from its beauty and personal care products Facing pressure from shareholders and consumers, Avon has announced that it will phase out triclosan from its beauty and personal care products. Triclosan is commonly used as an antimicrobial agent in colour cosmetics, creams, shaving products, detergents, toothpastes and antibacterial soaps, but has been linked to hormone disruption and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Recently, Avon’s competitors have adopted cosmetic chemical safety standards that exceed existing federal regulations. Notably, Johnson & Johnson announced in 2012 [Focus on Surfactants, Nov 2012] that it would eliminate chemicals of concern, including triclosan, from baby and adult products. In Sep 2013, Procter & Gamble announced it would eliminate triclosan and the phthalate DEP from all products by 2014. Original Source: Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, 2014. APPLICATIONS Personal care products Dow Corning unveils silicone glycerol emulsifier with multi-performance benefits Dow Corning launched Dow Corning ES-5600 silicone glycerol emulsifier at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) Suppliers’ Day 2014. This innovative water-in-oil emulsifier with diglycerol hydrophilic functionality enables formulators to achieve exceptional performance in polyethylene glycol (PEG)-free systems. Dow Corning ES-5600 silicone glycerol emulsifier provides high dispersion capabilities for colour and tone intensity. It also delivers outstanding oil phase flexibility for multiple formulation options to meet increasing consumer demand for such improved sensory benefits as smooth texture, comfortable wear and low odour. It creates emulsions with small particle size and offers high stability for liquid foundations, colour cosmetics and sun care products. It produces lower-viscosity emulsions for various combinations of silicone and organic oils. ES-5600 silicone glycerol emulsion is a highly effective dispersant for pigments and fine particles such as titanium dioxide sunscreen, offering homogeneity and stability even at high temperatures. Cosmetics manufacturers benefit from its unique colour intensity, uniform coverage for even skin tone and enhanced sunscreen sensory performance, including easier spreadability and less whitening and tackiness than competitive products. New introductions at in-cosmetics 2014 At in-cosmetics 2014 in Hamburg, Germany, Berg + Schmidt (B+S) presented its portfolio of cosmetics raw materials. B+S has added hydrolysed lyso-lecithin and hydrated lecithin, two innovative, high-quality lecithin fractions, to its BergaMuls product line. These products are natural emulsifiers for many applications. B+S also presented the new environment-friendly ergaScrub product range, which allows manufacturers to formulate without synthetic polyethylene (PE) beads as scrub particles. Lipo Chemicals also exhibited natural physical exfoliants that are said to offer ‘great options’ for PE bead replacement. Desert Whale Jojoba Co’s Jojoba Scrubeads, created from a combination of castor oil and jojoba wax, are a natural, affordable alternative to PE beads. They are ideal for formulations that require higher mixing temperatures, as their melting point is between 8290°C, being above that of a traditional wax sphere. Jojoba Spheres, made with hydrogenated jojoba oil, are a premier exfoliant derived from fully hydrogenated jojoba wax in a perfectly spherical shape. These spheres are available in a wide range of colours and sizes. The melting point range is 68-70°C. Oil-free jojoba (OFJ) spheres, made with jojoba esters, allow the formulator to get the same benefit of jojoba spheres without having oil in the name. The melting point range for these spheres is 66-70°C. Lipo VI is a unique exfoliating ingredient produced by the controlled grinding of the seeds of the Ecuadorian ivory palm, Phytelephas aequatoralis, and is available in two JULY 2014
