Obituary

Dr. James L. Voss (1934–2013) Dr. Voss was raised on the family farm near Grand Junction in western Colorado. He graduated from veterinary school in 1958 at what was then known as Colorado A&M, which is now Colorado State University, and received a Master’s degree from CSU in 1966. He began his professional career as an Equine Ambulatory Service clinician at CSU. He eventually became Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences, and eventually Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He retired from active service at CSU in 2001. Dr. Voss was known for his colorful country humor, whip-smart intelligence, core decency, and far-reaching vision of the veterinary medicine profession. He was instrumental in building a new world-class veterinary teaching hospital on the south campus of Colorado State University. The facility is now named after Dr. Voss. He is also credited with establishing research-focused areas in animal reproduction and biotechnology, cancer biology, environmental health sciences, infectious diseases, and neurobiology. Professionally, he was well known in the fields of equine medicine and equine reproduction. He was named Colorado Veterinarian of the Year in 1990, he received the CSU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004, and he was a president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Dr. Voss was the author of numerous clinical and scientific publications and coeditor with Dr. Angus McKinnon of a landmark textbook called Equine Reproduction that was published in 1993. The book was considered the foremost treatise on the topic for almost 20 years. James L. Voss is survived by his wife Kay, sons Ed and Bill, and daughter Laura. Dr. James L. Voss passed away on July 12, 2013, in Fort Collins, Colorado, after a long illness. He was 79 years old.
