Meet our Editor Dr Luciano Giovanni Nardo

Luciano Nardo was born in Catania, Sicily, Italy in 1975. He was educated at the Catholic College Leonardo da Vinci, San Giovanni Battista de la Salle in Catania. He later graduated with a first-class honours degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Catania. During his medical studies he was awarded many prizes and obtained several undergraduate distinctions, and developed a deep interest in human reproduction and childbirth. Dr Nardo visited many academic departments of obstetrics and gynaecology in Italy, Ireland, England, France and the United States. He began his training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University Hospital Vittorio Emanuele in Catania under Professor Sarina Caschetto, where he also obtained his Medical Doctorate working on neoangiogenesis and endometrial adenocarcinoma. His promising career as resident in obstetrics and gynaecology, encompassing research and formal training, was followed by success in the academic environment. Inspired by his insight into minimal access surgery in gynaecology, Dr Nardo moved to London, England where he joined the team of Dr Alan Farthing at St Mary’s Hospital. He met specialists such as Dr William Buckett and Dr Raj Rai and developed a parallel interest in gynaecological endocrinology and recurrent miscarriage. Keen to achieve a satisfactory completion to his training in obstetrics and gynaecology, he accepted an invitation to join the Department at Wexham Park Hospital, Berkshire, England where he worked with well-established consultants Dr Philip W Reginald and Dr Sam Dimitry. Subsequently, he moved to the south-west part of London to work with Dr Andrew Riddle first and later with Dr Gareth Beynon at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey, England. He was awarded the Diploma of the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine, London in 2001 and an honorary fellowship by Imperial College, London in the same year. Currently he works full time as specialist registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University Kingston Hospital, Surrey, England. Dr Nardo has focused his research on endometrial implantation, recurrent miscarriage and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). He has developed collaborative links with researchers in Greece, Italy, China and Canada, including Professor Antonis Makrigiannakis, Dr Fulvia Sinatra, Dr Dong-mei Huang and Dr William Buckett. He was among the first to report in the literature a strong relationship between morphological (i.e. pinopodes) and molecular (i.e. integrins) markers of

implantation during the putative window of implantation in humans. He was first to demonstrate that mid-follicular serum concentrations of LH and testosterone do not have a significant relationship with pregnancy outcome in women with recurrent miscarriage. Furthermore, using 3-D ultrasound for diagnostic purposes in women with PCOS, Dr Nardo showed that ovarian stromal volume is not correlated with biochemical indices of the endocrinopathy. Sharing his dedication and enthusiasm in the study of PCOS with other clinicians such as Professor Hakan Yarali (Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey) and Professor Anna Maria Fulghesu (University of Cagliari, Italy), he is now undertaking a large multicentre study on hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance in young women in the Mediterranean countries. Recently, in collaboration with Dr Gareth Beynon, he introduced into clinical practice an endoscopic approach, known as the Helica Thermal Coagulator, for the treatment of early stage endometriosis. The results of the first studies with this technique are due for publication in the near future. His research team won several awards at national and international meetings. His international duties widened as his academic skills became apparent, serving as ad-hoc reviewer on many peer-review journals and becoming an active member of many international societies including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy, and the European Society of Gynecological Endocrinology. He was recently invited to join the editorial board of Reproductive BioMedicine Online. In 2003, with Professor Hassan Sallam (University of Alexandria, Egypt), Dr Nardo was a founding member of the Mediterranean Society for Reproductive Medicine (MSRM) and was elected as its executive secretary. The Society is strongly committed to supporting a comprehensive educational programme comprised of workshops, courses and congresses for professionals who practise the full spectrum of reproductive medicine and surgery. Dr Nardo is author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications. He has presented over 100 papers at international conferences, lecturing widely on several subjects including reproductive endocrinology, ultrasonography and endoscopic surgery. He has held numerous visiting lecturer posts in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Furthermore, he was called to serve as professional advisor for the Council of Healthcare, Gerson Lehrman Group, USA by providing his knowledge and expertise in the interest of continuing education, best medical practice and women’s well-being. Outside his work, Luciano busies himself with his son Filadelfo Luke and happily enjoys sharing life with his partner Carina Harriet Anderson, who is also a dedicated obstetrician and gynaecologist. He enjoys reading, listening to jazz music, cooking, travelling and socializing with friends. He also likes winter skiing and playing tennis and golf.
