Dr Roderick Murray, 70, an authority on biological standardization died recently after a heart attack at the National Naval Medical Center. Dr Murray headed the Division of Biologics Standards ~-om 1956 to 1972 when it ,,,,.as part of NIH. The division w ~ then transferred to the Food and Drug Administration and b ~ c ~ e the current Bureau of Biologics. Until his retirement in I973, he remained with NIAID m sF~ciaI assistant to the Director, ap~inted far his e x ~ i s e in hepatitis research° At that same ~ime. he also retired from h~ g~sition a~sassistant surgeon general, a rank which he attained in 1968. Dr Murray w~ ~ m in Christchurch, New 7~atand, and grew up in Scotland and South Africa. He r~eived a BSc degree in Chemist~- and Physics from the Unive~ity of Witwatersrand, ~ u t h Africa, an MS,z in Organic chemistry from the University of ~ u t h Africa and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. During ~1or~ War It, Dr Murray served with a mt~Jical la~rato~¢ in the South Pacific, and devoted time to studying haematology and outbreaks of parmsitic infestations. In 1947, he b~ame a commissioned officer for the U.S. Public Health ~rvice and starred work in NIH's old Lak~ratory of Biologics Control. He ~came Assistant Chief of that laboratoD, in 1949, and conducted studies on inactions hepatitis and serum hepatitis. In 1952, he was p~moted to the r ~ k of Medical Director of PHS. In 1956 he e Director, Division of Biologics Standards, and in I965 received the Distinguished ~rvice Medal from the then HE'-.V s~retary, Anthony J. Celebrezze. Dr Murray was the author and co-author of more than 50 scientific pa~rs in his field and served on numerous scientific and adviso~ committees and panels. He w ~ a member of the World Health Organization E×pert Committee on Biological StandaMization and the Surgeon General's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Dr Murr~ry w ~ a m e m ~ r of the Ha~'ard Club of W~hington and the St Andrews Socie~. We all res~cted his advice and will miss him gr~tly. Our sympathies go to his wife Barbara, his daughter Joanne and his ~ n Richard.
