Lation, the effects of dexamethasone therapy on hemodynamics, the pharmacology of glucocorticoids, and the role of Zf-aminosteroids in stroke and trauma.
This is the proceedings of a meeting held in JtaJy in 198% The papers are grouped into sections on biophysics and biochemistry of quinones; quinones and bioenergetics; biomedical and clinical applications of ubiquinone. There is an introductory review on the role of ubiquinones in biological membranes, and a closing review on clinical therapy with &enzyme Qla.

Enzyme Chemistry; l&pact and AppBeations, 2nd ednEdited by C. J. SUCKLINO. 383 pp. 1990. Chapman Br Hall, London. ;E40. The topics reviewed in this book are: mechanistic basis of enzyme (E} catalysis; chemical models of selected coenzyme catalyses; selectivity in synthesis, chemical or E? E as targets for drug design; metal ion chemistry and E; E and the biosynthesis of natural products; E in the food industry; E and protein chemistry. The level is undergraduate/postgraduate but most readers will find something new and of interest.
This is the proceedings of the 5th International Congress of Toxicology held in Brighton, U.K. in 1989. The main topics are: the mechanisms of actions of carcinogens; reactive intermediates; functional basis for neurotoxieity; toxicity of xenobiotics; risk assessment; eco-toxicology; selective toxicity in the lung; immunotoxicology; susceptibility of different age groups; clinical efficacy of antidotes; environmental neurotoxins; chemically induced cell injury. There is increasing information that many diseases are induced or promoted by toxic materials in the environment. This book provides an interesting account of the frontiers of toxicology. Reviews
This is the second volume on ionic channels. Volume 114 dealt with calcium channels. This volume deals with sodium and potassium channels. The three reviews are: (I) diversity of sodium channels in aduh and cultured cells, in oocytea and in lipid biIayers, by B. Neumcke; (2) potassium eha=eIs in excitable and non-excitable cells, by H-AD. Kolb; (3) peptide toxins and potassium channels, by F. Dreyer. The reviews in these two volumes are of a very high standard and provide excellent introductions and surveys of the subjects. Steroids in Dkeases of the Central Nervous @ate-Edited by R. CA:APftf)EO. 306 pp. 1989. Wiley, Chicbeater. $35. Steroids are used to treat brain tumors, head and spinal cord injuries, pain, multiple sclerosis, polymyositis, stroke and ischaemia. This volume describes these uses of steroids and also provides information on glucocorticoid receptor regu-
Colony stimulating factors &SF) or growth factors (GF) occur in a large number of tissues though more is known about those regulating red blood cells and white blood ceils. This volume surveys: bone marrow and stem cells; hematopoietic GF receptors; granulocyte CSF; granulocytemacrophsge CSF; Interleukin 3; megakaryocyte GF; eosinophil differentiation factor (Interleukin 5); erythropoietin CSF and leukemia; large scale production of hematopoietic CSF; dinicai use of hematopoietic GF, gene expression during growth and regulation. The structure and synthesis of hematopoie~n has increased the moral of research workers in this field and the time can not be too far away when GFs will be available for the stimulation and inhibition of many of the blood cell systems. Drug Reaiatanee in Canear Therapy-Edited by R. F. OZOLS. 210 pp. f989. Kluwer Academic. Dordecht. D.Fl230. S60.50. Over the past 20 years substantial progress has been made in the development of cancer chemotherapby. Unfortunately many patients develop resistance to the chemotheraphy and this can develop into cross resistance to other drugs. This book examines some of the probkms of drug resistance in cancer: the ebnknl problem; multi drug resistance; P-glycoprotein; anthra~cl~e resistance; calcium channel Mockers and monoclonal antibodies; protein kinase C; resistance to alkylating agents; cisplatin; glutathione S transferase; radiation resistance. There is a biochemical and pharmacological problem here that requires solving.
