PATENTS Sealing off a gap formed by shaft “toothing” Applicant: Voith Patent GmbH, Germany This invention relates to a means of sealing off a gap formed by shaft “toothing” between one end of a drive shaft, introduced into a housing, and a further shaft in the housing. The approach involves the use of a shaft seal that is formed in a bushing-like manner and extends over regions of the drive shaft, and the further shaft, and covers the gap. A sealing ring, arranged at one, free end of the shaft seal, on the particular shaft, interacts with the shaft and the shaft seal and provides a fluid-tight connection. Shaft seal mechanism with an annular resin seal lip Applicant: IHI Corp, Japan The seal mechanism described by this patent is provided with an annular resin seal lip that is disposed coaxially with respect to a shaft (S), and is brought into contact with the peripheral surface of the shaft. The seal mechanism is further provided with a stopper – part of the metal housing (H) surrounding the shaft – which is disposed between the shaft and a portion of the seal lip, other than an edge portion in direct contact with the shaft, and is disposed at a distance from the peripheral surface of the shaft. The stopper is composed of a material that has a thermal expansion coefficient that is lower than that of the material forming the seal lip. Furthermore, as a result of the stopper being brought into contact with the seal lip, which reduces in diameter when cooled, the axis of the seal lip is made to correspond with the axis of the shaft. Applicant: AES Engineering Ltd, UK A drive ring forms the subject of this patent. It is used in mechanical seals that are fitted to rotating equipment employed in virtually all types of industries. Drive rings are components commonly used in mechanical seals to provide rotational drive between the rotating shaft and the rotary components of a mechanical seal, and are occasionally referred to as clamp rings. This patent describes a mechanical seal that comprises an elastomeric member (3); a springbiasing member (8); a longitudinally floating, first member (5); a longitudinally non-floating

PATENTS second member (4); a longitudinally floating third member (9); and a longitudinally floating seal face (7). The elastomeric member is in sealing engagement with the seal face and the first and second members, and the spring-biasing member is longitudinally pointed between the seal face and the third member. The first and second members are longitudinally restrained and coupled (rotationally) by male longitudinally protruding portions (12) which engage with female portions (11). Polymer-modified asphalt compositions using an ionomerbased elastomer for a crack and joint sealant Applicant: Lanxess Inc, Canada A polymer-modified asphalt composition containing asphalt, oil, a polymer additive and an ionomer are described. The composition may be used in a sealant to seal a crack or joint in a concrete or asphalt structure. The sealant is applied to the crack or joint in an amount sufficient to fill the crack or joint, and is cured to cause bonding of the sealant to the crack or joint. The composition may be prepared by heating a mixture of asphalt, oil, a polymer additive, an aggregate and an ionomer, and blending it for a time that is sufficient to mix the ingredients homogeneously. Method for producing a functional element for flat seals Applicant: Elringklinger Ag, Germany A method has been developed for producing a functional element for flat seals. According to the associated patent, a functional material layer is provided with a sieve region in which through-openings – for the flow of a fluid – are freely arranged between threads of a fabric or braided fabric. The aim of this invention is to create an enhanced method such that the best possible seal is established around the sieve regions. To achieve this, the functional material layer is provided with a sealing region that is designed to have a tight cross-section, and the through-openings (of the fabric or braided fabric) are closed by softening and compressing a filler material. Reduction in the leakage flow-rate of a brush seal using a flexible geometric obstruction Applicant: SNECMA, France This invention concerns a brush seal system for use in an air–oil seal for a turbo-machine shaft bearing that has an axis of rotation. The seal described has a layer of carbon bristles, held between a first ring (referred to as the front ring, disposed upstream of a flow of air passing through the seal, and a second ring (referred to as the rear ring), disposed downstream of the flow of air. The surface of the layer of bristles, which is turned towards the front ring, is provided with a non-metal flexible element that stops a portion of the flow of air, which flows through the seal in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of rotation. Annulus seal using energised, discrete, soft interfacial elements Applicant: Vetco Gray Inc, USA This disclosure relates in general to well-head assemblies, but in particular to seal assemblies for sealing between inner and outer well-head members. The seal assembly for sealing the annulus between inner and outer well-head members includes an energiser ring formed from a high strength elastic material that has inner and outer legs. An annular inner recess, with grooves on its base, is formed on an inward-facing surface of the inner leg. An inner diameter seal ring, formed from an inelastic material, engages the grooves of the inner recess. An annular outer recess, with grooves on its base, is formed on an outward-facing surface of the outer leg. An outer diameter seal ring made from an inelastic material engages the grooves of the outer recess. When the energiser ring is coaxially inserted in the annulus, the inner diameter seal ring is compressed and permanently deformed, and makes contact with the inner well-head member. Similarly, the outer diameter seal ring is compressed and permanently deformed, and makes contact with the outer wellhead member. According to the inventor, this annulus seal maintains a seal on serious surface defects, operates over a wide temperature range, does not swell or degrade mechanically in most fluid environments, does not suffer from explosive gas decompression and can be easily and cheaply manufactured. Rotary engine seal Applicant: ISIS Innovation Ltd, UK This invention relates to a rotor assembly that has a system for sealing at apexes or faces of the rotor. In a disclosed arrangement the apex seal or the face seal consists of a compliant member. This is configured such that its shape or orientation can change in use in response to changes in the speed of rotation of the rotor, the pressurisation across the compliant member, or a change in clearance between the sealing surface and a mounting element to which the compliant member is mounted, to deflect towards or away from the sealing surface. Rolling bearing with seal Applicant: NSK Ltd, Japan In this patent, details are given of a rolling bearing with a seal in which a seal lip can be forced to make sliding contact with a slinger – always at a constant contact pressure – without being impacted by the centrifugal force associated with the rotation of the bearing, and which ensures dust resistance. The rolling bearing is provided with a ring-shaped seal member, which is secured to an end-section in the axial direction of the inner peripheral surface of an outer wheel (which is a rotating wheel), and that seals the space between the outer wheel and an inner wheel. Also provided is a ringshaped slinger that is secured to an end-section in the axial direction of the outer peripheral surface of the inner wheel (which is a fixed wheel), with the seal member being in contact with the slinger. The seal member is provided with a seal lip that is in sliding contact with the slinger. The lip deforms elastically so as to turn radially outwards because of the centrifugal force associated with the rotation of the outer wheel. The slinger is formed so as to be curved in accordance with the path of movement of a tip section of the seal lip, which is deformed elastically by the centrifugal force, and has a curved sliding-contact section with which the tip section (of the seal lip) is always in contact.
