68P Outlines an approximate method, using a simplified soil model, for preddcting the behaviour of raft foumdations s~bJected to applied vertical forces amd moments. Results obtaimed for circular rafts of finite rigidity are compared with those obtained~ from more rigorous solutions, by other authors. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for the surface settlements and raft bemding moments over a wide range of soil inhcm~eneity. The versatility of the method of analysis is illustrated for an unusual asymmetrical structure. Computed total and differential settlements are shown to be in reasonable a~eement with measured values amd those ~redicted by an independent plane strain finite element a~alysis. The factors included are: anisotropy, magnitudes of material properties, rate and gecmetry of loading e n c o u n t e r e d in lay~ed f O ~ a t i o n s . A field problem involving layered foumdation consisting of varved cl~ys with significant anisot~opy in coefficient of permeability is solved ar~ the nunerical predictions are compared with field data. A quantitative parametric study is performed to investigate the influence of wide variations in material properties in layered medla~ ani an example field problem involving layers with wide variations in properties is solved. 784158 PREDICTION OF VERTICAL VIBR~ION OF FOOTINGS BY MASS-SPRI~-DASHI~ M~EL. TECHNICAL NOTE Sankaran, K S; Smbrahmar~am, M S Soils Foumd, VlT, NI, March 1977, P53-84 784159 ON THE INFLUENCE OF PROGRESSIVE FAILURE ON THE BEARING CAPACITY OF S H A L ~ FOUNDATIONS IN DENSE SAND Ysm~i, H; Kimura, T; Fuji-i, N Soils Fourzl, V16, ~ , Dec 1976, Fll-22 Repocts centrifuge experiments to obtain bearing capacity factccs amd settlements cccresporzling to the maximtt~ bearing capacity for footings in d~ffecent comditions, amd compares the results with theoretical bearing capacities calculated by comaldering the mobilised angle of sheer stress.

Includes design criteria, pile resistance, pile-soll interaction~ settleme~ analysis, pile groupsj lateral loaddmg, and construction problems. 227 refs. Slopes 784166 STABILITY CHARTS FOR SIMPLE EARTH SLOFES Cousins, B F J Geotech Er~mg Div ASCE, VI04, NGT2, Feb 1978, P267- 279 Charts are presented for cohesive-frictional s which give safety factors and details of criti slip circles for depth factors of l, 1.25, and as well as toe circles. The charts sre drs~n f pore pressure ratios of 0, 0.25, and 0.50 and for slopes up to 45 deE. A variation of the fr tion circle method was used to construct the charts. The format of the charts is similar to Jsmbu's charts so that the need for so much intewpolation, extrapolation, ar~ iteration, a characteristic of earlier charts, has been remowed. However, Janbu's method for allowing fo: pore pressure was found to be unacceptable exc for e,11 slope amgles and low pore pressure ratios. For high slope amgles and pcwe pressur ratios Jambu's method gives safety factors th~ are too high.
