Sustainable water-soluble polymer for detergents In the US, AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry is offering Alcoguard H 5240, a new, more-sustainable watersoluble polymer developed for detergent applications. Alcoguard H 5240 is based on an innovative hybrid biopolymer technology combining the benefits of both synthetic and natural polymer components to provide effective performance and an improved environmental profile, according to the company. The product prevents scale formation in laundry and automatic dishwashing detergents and other uses where synthetic water-soluble polymers are typically used. The US Environmental Protection Agency has nominated the new technology for ‘P2’ (pollution prevention) recognition. HAPPI, Household & Personal Products Industry, Jul 2010, 47 (7), 126

and transparent shampoos and treatments are now possible, DSM claims. Tilamar OP40 is an opacifying agent that contributes a ‘nourishing and creamy appearance’ in hair care products, according to DSM. Suitable for use in low viscosity systems, it exhibits improved salt stability as well as stability in cationic formulations, the company says. The range also includes Tilamar Quat 740 and Tilamar Fix A1000. In addition to applications in hair care products, both Tilamar Quat 2240 and OP40 are also suitable for use in skin care formulations. DSM debuts polymers for hair care DSM has developed a range of conditioning polymer products for the hair care market, including Tilamar Quat 2240, Tilamar Quat 640 and Tilamar OP40. The range was launched at the in-cosmetics 2010 show in April. The conditioning properties of Tilamar Quat 640 make it ideal for use in products targeted for dry or chemically treated hair, according to DSM. In addition to ‘excellent’ compatibility and improved feel on wet and dry hair, its low viscosity results in easier handling and processing of the finished product, and it leaves no product build-up, the company claims. The polymer can be used in a variety of hair care applications including shampoos, conditioners, treatments and colorants. Also noted for its conditioning properties is Tilamar Quat 2240, which like Tilamar Quat 640 leaves no product-build up and has very good feel properties. With this polymer, easier-to-formulate clear 4

Smart Nutra Inc makes breakthrough advancement in the treatment of lice According to Florida firm Smart Nutra Inc, there were 6-12 M outbreaks of head lice reported in the US in 2010. Large outbreaks of louse infestations have also been reported from all over the world. The number of cases of human louse infestations (or pediculosis) worldwide is in the hundreds of millions. Children between 4 and 13 years of age are the most frequently infested group. Doctors often fail to recognize a louse or its nits (lice eggs), and there are many misconceptions about head lice, nits and head lice remedies, the most common being that to have lice you must be dirty. The UK’s National Health Service and many American health agencies report that lice prefer clean hair as it’s easier to attach eggs to clean hair strands. The only true way to completely eliminate head lice is to kill lice and remove all nits. It is a fact that nits can survive off a human host for 7-10 days. After much research and testing, Smart Nutra has developed a non-toxic formula that is claimed to end lice infestations in one day. Clearlice is an easy-toapply shampoo, and a non-toxic SEPTEMBER 2010
