than $400 million available in cash at the end of the quarter, the company says it is looking for global acquisitions that will bring it new technology or expand its presence in attractive end markets such as healthcare. To develop and lead activities in this area, PolyOne has created the new role of VP mergers and acquisitions and appointed investment banker Joel Rathbun to the position. Dutch collaboration for flameretardant LFT PP composites results in new masterbatches

I

n The Netherlands, a collaboration between compounder Resin (Products & Technology) BV and partners photovoltaic module developer TULiPPS™ Solar BV, industrial colorants producer QolorTech BV and Austrian plastic components manufacturer voestalpine Plastics Solutions has developed a family of long fibre thermoplastic (LFT) polypropylene (PP) composite materials. The flame-retarded thermoplastic composite materials are reported to contain a proprietary non-halogenated ‘green’ additives package that does not lead to significant reductions in key mechanical properties. In addition, three new ‘industrial’ colour masterbatches were also developed for this new family of flame-retardant LFT PP composites to expand their colour palette beyond basic automotive black and neutral (nonpigmented). The colour formulations (blue, green and grey) were also specifically engineered to avoid any negative effect on mechanical properties, the partners say. The coloured, flame-retarded LFT PP composite materials have been developed and tested for the new Cosmos™ solar photovoltaic lightweight module technology from TULiPPS Solar. Moreover, ECO-FORTE FR™, the new flame-retardant solution for polyolefins (including TPE and TPO) from Resin (Products & Technology), and the new colours for LFT PP from QolorTech are now commercially available for customers in other industries. QolorTech is an independent producer and supplier of industrial colouring solutions for paint, printing, ink, plastic and other industries. The company provides its

RockTron’s recycled eco-mineral fillers land new application in reinforced PP

U

K-based eco-mineral specialist RockTron and French compounder Eurostar Engineering Plastics (Eurostar EP) have announced the launch of a new grade of polypropylene (PP) containing RockTron’s 100% recycled, high-performance mineral fillers [ADPO, December 2009]. The new grade, Starpylen ECR30K ECR: PP 30% Glass Bead Reinforced, contains 30% of RockTron’s MinTron™ alumino-silicate solid glass spheres and is part of a new range of thermoplastic compounds made with 100% recycled, low carbon reinforcing agents, developed as a result of customer pressure. Produced from the fly ash waste generated by coalfired power stations, the MinTron filler is described by Eurostar EP as ‘hitting both green targets and performance demands’. The company’s new polymer grades have been designed to meet stringent application requirements with no compromise on performance when compared to traditional fillers such as man-made glass beads. They offer a cost-effective solution, while meeting the demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable materials in end-use applications, and are available in PP and PA, Eurostar EP says. The range of eco-friendly mineral products that RockTron’s process generates can be used as fillers in elastomers and coatings, as well as polymers, according to the company. Eurostar EP is one of a number of compounders and polymer producers evaluating the ecomineral fillers in a range of thermoplastic and thermoset applications in Europe and the USA, RockTron reports.
