Dutch paper mill uses ABS pumps for fastest paperboard machine The De Eendracht Karton Paper Mill, based in Appingedam, The Netherlands ordered a complete set of agitators, pumps and diffusers from ABS to set up a new paperboard machine.

The De Eendracht Karton Paper Mill in Appingedam, based in he Netherlands, is part of the Heinzel Paperboard Group. Recently it placed a complete order of agitators, pumps and diffusers from ABS, in order to set up the paper mill’s new KM11 machine – an investment of 80 million Euros. This project is one of many at the mill, which would make the movement into new areas of the packaging industry possible.

As well as this, a total of about 30 agitators will be used in several new processes. These include side entry and top entry SCABA agitators for stock preparation and mixing/machine chests and top entry SCABA agitators for CaCO3 slurry with maximum 78% dry solids content for the coating kitchen.

The KM11 machine is designed to produce paperboard. According to ABS, it will be one of the fastest board machines in Europe with a capacity of 140 000 tons. In order to secure a reliable operation, De Eendracht Karton has installed 4 of ABS’s BA pumps to be used as head box pumps.

Roeland Jacobs, project leader of De Eendracht Karton, explained his reasons for chosing ABS Pumps. “We have chosen ABS because they have 135 years of experience worldwide in the pulp and paper industry,” he says. “With their patented Scaba agitators they can provide us with the lowest possible power need for the best mixing process. “A good example of this is the CaCO3 slurry tanks,” Jacobs continues. “Competitors engineered agitators with bottom steady bearing and 37 kW installed power. Now De Eendracht Karton paper will operates with 11.000 mm long shaft free hanging and 18.5 kW installed power. Other factors were taken into account when choosing other types of pump.”For the head box pumps we have chosen ABS because we can use their end suction type BA pump with the patented ESDF impeller which generates low pulses,” claims Jacobs. “Because of the mill upgrade and new investments, the existing waste water plant

needed to be reinforced in order to obtain increased waste water capacity. This was achieved by an installation of around 2,000 NOPOLâ PRK diffusers from ABS.” Henk Sikkema, manager at WWTP describes the benefits of the new installation. “In December 2004 the system was started up,” he explains. “The first measurements shows, that there is a more efficient oxygen transfer and therefore the power consumption has dropped significantly.”
