E-MRS & MRS Discuss Educational and Scientific Collaboration The European Union and the United States signed an EU-US Science and Technology cooperation Agreement in Washington on 5th December 1997. This agreement now comes into force from 1999 for an initial period of five years. In light of the above agreement both E-MRS and MRS thought it opportune to hold a first meeting to discuss the elaboration of a joint new Initiative on EU-US Materials Science Education and Scientific Collaboration. A high level meeting was organised in Boston in December 1998, attended by Professors Neminach (President MRS) and Hull (Immediate Past President MRS) from MRS and Crean

(Immediate Past President E-MRS), Siffert (General Secretary E-MRS) and Glasow (Past president E-MRS) from E-MRS. Amongst the first tentative ideas to be elaborated are the stimulation of EU-US scientific exchange programmes in materials science at the postgraduate level, the elaboration of an EU-US postgraduate research positions directory and the organisation of topical EU-US workshops jointly organised by the E-MRS and MRS. Once again we welcome suggestions from our members on what activities or services they would like to see developed by E-MRS and MRS within the context of the EU-US collaboration agreement that will come into place this year. Please email Gabriel Crean, email [email protected] or Paul Siffert, email [email protected], with your suggestions before end March 1999.
