ART AT MAYO CLINIC
East River and East River #2 by Mitchell Johnson Recognizing the contribution art has had in the Mayo Clinic environment since the original Mayo Clinic Building was finished in 1914, Mayo Clinic Proceedings features some of the numerous works of art displayed throughout the buildings and grounds on Mayo Clinic campuses as interpreted by the author.
M
itchell Johnson, a painter and colorist, was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina (1964-) and attended high school at the Staten Island academy, graduating in 1982. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, in 1986, and attended the Washington Studio School in Washington, DC, from 1987-1988. He furthered his art education at the Parsons School of Design located in New York City, receiving his MFA in 1990. In addition, Johnson’s work has been featured in several movie productions and television shows and extensively displayed in public and private collections. He maintains a studio in Palo Alto,
California, and frequents many European cities as well.1-3 East River and East River #2, are two prime examples of Johnson’s use of color and shape to evoke an impression. He says, “My paintings are very much about how we see more than they are about the way things look . the color and the shapes are the only reason that I make the painting. These different combinations that have some kind of mystery, some kind of intrigue that pulls you in.”3 More organic than many of his geometric shapes, East River and East River #2, blur the lines between nature and invention. Viewed closely, these two reflect primitive art in their simplicity, and at a distance, Impressionism, in their blending of line and color. Johnson works to ensure his paintings provide different perspectives from when they are viewed both close up and at a distance.3
East River and East River #2 are located on the 12th floor of the Gonda Building on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota, and are gifts from the artist in honor of Francis Buadi, MD.
