to new applications and technologies in high-opportunity areas, such as vinyl, adhesives, sealants, coatings and films’, Vaughn reveals. The launch of Vitroflex B is also the ‘first major milestone’ for the organization’s recently established business development team, which is ‘laser-focused on market strategy and taking us into new areas’, comments Scott Neuheardt, VP and general manager for Emerald’s plasticizers business. ‘This launch demonstrates exactly what we set out to accomplish by building this team, and we expect many great things to come’, Neuheardt adds. In addition to its new Vitroflex brand, Emerald’s portfolio includes K-Flex® non-phthalate plasticizers and lowVOC coalescents. The company also produces Good-Rite® antioxidants and intermediates; Cure-Rite® accelerators; and Kalama® and Purox® benzoates, food-grade antimicrobials and intermediates, among other product lines; and is a major global producer of benzoic acid, benzaldehyde and related chemistries. It has manufacturing facilities in the USA and Europe, a worldwide sales and distribution network, and more than 700 employees. More information: www.emeraldmaterials.com
Eckart offers sparkling orange effect pigment
E
ffect pigment specialist Eckart GmbH, part of the Altana group of companies, has introduced Edelstein Topaz Orange, which is described as combining a highly chromatic, intense colour with powerful sparkle and gloss. According to the company, the new pigment is suitable for use in a broad range of plastics including polyolefins, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and engineering resins. Edelstein Topaz Orange is based on tailored silicates and innovative coating technology, Eckart reports. In addition to its ‘exceptional optical appearance’, which offers ‘new styling opportunities for exciting shades’, the novel effect pigment features outstanding durability, high chemical resistance and excellent shear stability, the company claims. It can be used in extrusion, injection and blow moulding, and blown and cast films, is compliant with requirements for food packaging applications, and is readily incorporated into all common resins, Eckart reports.
July 2018
The new pigment was showcased at the NPE 2018 tradeshow in May, where the company also highlighted de-dusted pearlescent pigment preparations Mastersafe ® Symic C393 [ADPO, November 2016] and Mastersafe Symic A/C/E 001L. Products in the Mastersafe Symic range are provided in a compacted pellet form for easy handling and dosing. Eckart also presented the latest edition of its annual ‘Colour Road’ series, which displays new colour trends and design concepts for the creative use of effect pigments in applications such as cosmetic packaging, consumer goods and interior decoration. ‘Colour Road 2018’ offers blue, green and anthracite tones plus a bronze colour, featuring ‘impressive metallic and sparkling effects’, according to the company. Elsewhere, Eckart’s sister company BYK Chemie has introduced Thixbooster and Thixbreaker, two new process additives that interact in ‘perfect synchronization’ to control the initial viscosity of epoxy resin systems, the company reports. They form the basis for BYK’s new viscosity control technology (VCT), which is claimed to open up ‘enormous value-added potential’ for manufacturers of epoxy resin systems. The new additives influence the properties of hydrophilic fumed silica particles, and thereby assist in reducing or adapting the initial viscosity of high-viscosity, two-component adhesives, sealing and putty materials, as well as protective coatings, which are used in components of wind turbines, rapid prototyping and other applications, BYK reports. Thixbreaker (BYK-P 2710) is designed for the epoxy resin component and Thixbooster (BYK-P 2720) for the corresponding amine hardener. The synchronized interaction between the two additives enables the creation of ‘the optimum application viscosity’ from two low-viscosity components, resulting in formulations that can be applied with the same layer thicknesses but more quickly and easily than current systems, the company asserts. VCT is claimed to reduce the production time of the formulation by roughly half, while the production volume during the same period is doubled. The low viscosity of the formulation also has logistical benefits, allowing the liquid formulations to be transported in environmentally friendly intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) or in tanker trucks, which reduces workload and transportation costs, BYK notes.
