Editor profile: Luqi Huang and Wei Gao Huang Luqi is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the executive vice president of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, the director of National Resource Center for Chinese Materia Medica, a leading researcher, a group leader of the experts guiding group for the national survey on Chinese Medicinal Material Resources, the head of Chinese Medicinal Material Resources innovation team of key area issued by Ministry of Science and Technology, former Chief Scientist of national 973 plan project. He is concurrently as the chairman of Chinese Materia Medica Identification Committee, which is the branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine, and the director of the Medicinal Plants and Plant Medicine Professional Board of Botanical Society of China, and the Chairman of the Technical Committee of Chinese Medicinal Materials Seeds (Seedling) Standardization. He won the second prize of State Science and Technology Progress Award as the first completed person for three times. He has published more than 500 professional papers on domestic and international top-level publications, obtained seven patents, and edited 12 books as Editor-in-Chief. He was awarded the China Academy of Engineering—Guang Hua Engineering Science and Technology Prize (youth award), “The State Special Support Plan”—National Millions of Talents Project, Science and Technology Award for Chinese Youth, and the Supervisor Award of the National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations. Dr. Wei Gao is a professor of Capital Medical University. He was selected into the Chang Jiang Scholars Program by the Ministry of Education and the National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program. He was funded by National Natural Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth Foundation, China. Dr. Gao got his Ph.D. degree in Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in 2008, and his doctoral thesis was selected as the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in 2010. He worked as

a lecturer (2008–2010), and then an associate professor (2010– 2012) in Capital Medical University (Beijing, China). After a year's training as a visiting associate professor in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, USA (2013–2014), Dr. Gao continued to work on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Capital Medical University and became a professor since 2016. Dr. Gao's research interests focus on Chinese medicinal resources and molecular pharmacognosy, especially the gene regulation, biosynthesis and the synthetic biology of terpenoidtype natural products found in medicinal plants. His group revealed the metabolic pathways and networks of tanshinones, triptolide and celastrol by using basic biochemical and biophysical strategies to investigate the function of enzymes and the mechanism. It is noteworthy that the full-length cDNAs of diterpene synthases, SmCPS and SmKSL, which are the key genes of tanshinone biosynthesis, were cloned and identified the first time, and the tanshinone precursor, miltiradiene, was firstly produced by his group in yeast with the modular pathway engineering (MOPE) strategy of synthetic biology. Dr. Gao has published over 72 papers, among which 22 SCI papers were published in JACS, New Phytologist, Organic letters, etc. He also gained five provincial awards and two patents. His research has been supported by several grants (National Natural Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth Foundation, the National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program, and 863 Program, etc). Besides the achievement in his research, Dr. Gao has been actively involved in teaching. He taught courses of Pharmaceutical Botany, Molecular Pharmacognosy, Chemistry of Chinese Materia Medica, etc., compiled seven textbooks and guided graduate, master and doctorial students in research and career development. Dr. Gao vividly provides extensive services to the scientific community which includes academic committees and advisory panels/boards. He is a member of TCM Identification Branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine, TCM Resources Branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine and China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica, etc. He also serves as a reviewer for many academic journals and has been invited to present his works in many international and national meetings.
