Editorial (2012, Vol. 26, No. 4) The Journal of Advanced Engineering Informatics covers a wide range of multi-disciplinary topics. On one hand, papers published in this journal have computing components relevant to ‘‘engineering informatics’’ which consists of ‘‘explicit knowledge representation formalisms and reasoning techniques’’. On the other hand, these papers should deal with knowledge-intensive engineering applications. Since engineering itself is a broad area, traditionally the journal has focused on ‘‘artifact-centric engineering’’ such as mechanical engineering, architecture, civil engineering, and manufacturing. Although we do not limit ourselves only to these engineering applications, we do not publish papers in, for example, financial engineering. In order to cover engineering as an application field appropriately, this journal has had two or more Co-Editors-in-Chief. After serving the Journal of Advanced Engineering Informatics for almost 15 years as Co-Editor-in-Chief, Professor Ian Smith retired from his position on 1 July 2012. He is Professor at the Civil Engineering Institute of the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. Currently he is also Director of Applied Computing and Mechanics Laboratory (IMAC) of the Institute. He will concentrate on these activities and duties and remain on the Editorial Board of the Journal as an Emeritus Editor. Professor Smith’s contribution to the journal began with a special issue on ‘‘Structural Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence’’, which was published in Vol. 11(3), 1997. At that time, the journal was titled Artificial Intelligence in Engineering. He was appointed as Co-Editor of the journal in September 1997, which coincided with the publication of that special issue. During Professor Smith’s editorship, the Journal had to undergo major ‘‘make-overs’’ and continuous improvements. I am very happy that I could share with him these experiences and it was always a pleasure to work with him. In 2002, the Journal changed the titles from ‘‘Artificial Intelligence in Engineering’’ to the current ‘‘Advanced Engineering Informatics’’. This was a big change indeed, re-defining the journal and giving a clear new direction to the field, which is what now we proudly call engineering informatics. The journal is currently doing extremely very well, with its increasing submissions (of both regular papers and special issue papers) balanced distribution of topics between civil/architecture and mechanical/manufacturing areas. This was not possible without Professor Smith’s leadership and diligent contribution to the journal as Co-Editor-in-Chief. Professor Smith will be succeeded by Dr. William O’Brien who has been Associate Editor of the journal since January 2010. Dr. O’Brien is currently an Associate Professor and the Phil M. Fergusson Centennial Teaching Fellow in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. an expert on construction supply chain management and electronic collaboration. This means that from now on the journal is edited by two CoEditors (Tomiyama and O’Brien) supported by Professor ChunHsien Chen of the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. In submitting a paper to us on the Elsevier Editorial System (EES, http://ees.elsevier.com/advei/), you will be asked to choose a handling editor. If your paper’s subject area is more towards mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and manufacturing, please choose Tomiyama as a handling editor. If more towards civil engineering, architecture, and environmental engineering, please choose O’Brien as your handling editor. If you have a doubt, please consult one of us.
