Editorial for the special issue of RCIM for FAIM 2002

This special issue has been put together by selecting papers from the 12th international conference of Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing (FAIM), conducted at the Dresden University of Technology, Dresden, Germany last July. Authors from 35 countries presented 150 papers at the FAIM conference. The conference proceedings were published by Oldenbourg Verlog in a volume of 1480 pages (ISBN No. 3-486-27036-2). The editors of this book are Prof. William Sullivan, Prof. Munir Ahmad, Prof. Dieter Fichtner, Prof. Wilfred Saur, Dr. Gerald Weigert and Dr. Thomas Zerna. The papers in the proceedings cover the following themes: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Virtual Manufacturing Design and Product Development Business Processes Next Generation Manufacturing Systems Robotics and Sensing Systems Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks Manufacturing Processes and NC Machining Production Planning, Scheduling and Control Manufacturing Education Supply Chain Management Modelling and Simulation Web-based Manufacturing Semiconductor Manufacturing Cost issues in Manufacturing Case studies in Manufacturing

Each paper in this special edition of the RCIM Journal has been thoroughly refereed by two reviewers, and approximately 15 per cent of the FAIM conference papers has been included herein. Our intention is to publish a peer-reviewed collection of FAIM conference papers each year in the RCIM Journal. FAIM conferences have a rich tradition: The first conference, ‘‘Factory Automation and Information Management’’ was hosted in March 1991 by the University of Limerick. Authors from more than 18 countries contributed over 100 papers. The second conference, ‘‘Flexible Automation and Information Management,’’ was hosted by Virginia Tech in Washington, DC in June 1992. The third conference, 0736-5845/03/$ - see front matter r 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. PII: S 0 7 3 6 - 5 8 4 5 ( 0 2 ) 0 0 0 8 4 - 4

‘‘Flexible Automation and Integrated Manufacturing,’’ was hosted in June 1993 by the University of Limerick, Ireland. The fourth conference was held at Virginia Tech in Blacksburgh, Virginia in May 1994. The fifth conference was held at the Fraunhoffer Institute (IPT) for Manufacturing and Management, University of Stuttgart, Germany in June 1995. The sixth international conference was hosted in May 1996 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta Georgia. In June 1997 the conference was sponsored by the European process industries Competitiveness Centre (EPICC) at the University of Teesside in Middlesborough, United kingdom. FAIM 98 was hosted by Portland State University, Oregon with generous sport by Oregon State University and the Oregon centre for Advanced Technology Education. FAIM 99 was organised by the Centre for Economic Research at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, in June 1999. FAIM 2000 was hosted by the University of Maryland at College Park in USA, June 2000. FAIM 2001 was hosted by the Dublin City University, Ireland in July 2001. Last year, FAIM 2002 was hosted by Dresden University of Technology, Dresden, Germany. This year in June, FAIM 2003 will be hosted by the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department, University of South Florida, USA. The aims and scope of the journal and conferences are to present innovative research and focus on state-of-the art trends within the general areas of flexible automation, information management and intelligent manufacturing. Manufacturing and social competitiveness Economic and global manufacturing

Manufacturers today must compete in dynamic markets which demand excellence in areas of cost, quality and time to market. They must master rapidly changing materials and process technologies. They need to achieve short product development cycles, expand product lines, and combat shrinking product life cycles in a global economy marked by rapid fluctuations and increasing competition. Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing is based on advanced technologies, computer integrated product and process development, and related organisational methods that meet these changing conditions. The special issue addresses applications of some of these technologies and methods to the manufacturing environment, from industrial and academic perspectives.
