ith another journal issue under my belt, and with excellent work, guidance and prodding by those who do the real work of putting these issues together, I continue to look forward to working with you, the members of NAVAN, to provide the best possible forum for research, leadership, and review on the field of vascular access devices. It is my understanding that the review by Carol Renner on polyurethane and silicone based catheters has sparked quite a bit of discussion among ourselves. I hope that we can continue a discussion on the types of materials that best meet the needs of our patients so that we can make informed decisions when it comes to device selection. I encourage anyone who wishes to do so to submit herlhis experience with silicone-based devices. Another topic with a lot of interest is the NAVAN position on tip location for PICC catheters that is provided in this issue. Clinicians have had to alter the tip position of PICCs for a variety of reasons; however, NAVAN's statement provides a standard for tip positioning which will give us the basis to develop procedures and practice based upon solid clinical research. Within this issue is a review article on the MedWatch program of the FDA. This is a very useful program which assures that medical devices are being used properly and that the manufacturers of such devices are providing tools which are safe and effective. For a number of years I received complaints and concerns about a line of IV catheters and can appreciate both the users' and the manufacturers' desire to provide patients with the best possible care. It can be difficult to determine whether a clinician or a manufacturer is the cause of a device-related problem. I encourage you to read the article and then take the continuing education test so that in your daily contact with patients and devices you will have the basis for an informed decision and direction if a device does not appear to meet your or your patient's expectations. The world wide web provides us with an almost limitless information base; a powerful tool to learn and explore any number of topics. If you have not been on the web lately you have missed the NAVAN web pages, located at www.navannet.org. Early in its compilation, you can keep up with planned events under the calendar page, locate neighboring NAVAN chapters, and review the table of contents of the immediate past]VAD issue. Continue to visit the web site and participate in its expansion to address the needs of our members and those with an interest in the infusion field. Finally, we encourage you to dust off those half-completed manuscripts or sit down and begin to type out thoughts on vascular access that have been running around in your head and submit them to your ]VAD. •
