Editor’s parting note

It is a pleasure to write this Valedictory note upon the editorial transition for the Journal beginning this month I will be stepping down as the editor, and Dr. Rajiv Tandon, will take over as editor of The Asian Journal of Psychiatry. Dr. Tandon is an accomplished researcher and a dear friend of many years, who has been with the journal from the beginning in 2008. I will continue assisting him in this journal as a founding editor in the next year to help a smooth transition. This journal began in 2008 in response to a perceived need by The Asian Federation of psychiatric Associations, then under the leadership of Drs. Russell D’Souza and Parameshwara Deva. While Asia covers over two-thirds of the world population, and mental health priorities are rapidly expanding in this continent, there have been very few journals that have sought to bring to light this developing body of knowledge to a global readership. The journal since its inception has steadily expanded both in size and scope, and has covered a broad range of topics in global mental health. The journal now publishes six issues a year, and is indexed in Medline, Scopus, Cabell’s and PsycInfo. We have added new features to the Journal, including the Asian Pearls, columns on medical education, early career psychiatrists corner, images in

psychiatry, and personal narratives by persons with illnesses. We have also brought out several special theme sections on themes highly relevant to Asian Psychiatry, such as psychiatric classification and spirituality. Given the increasing recognition of neuropsychiatric disorders as leading causes of health related disability and the expanding mental health ‘‘gaps’’ in optimum care, the need for developing and disseminating new knowledge in this discipline is going to expand exponentially. The Asian Journal of Psychiatry will clearly have a lot to offer, and is poised to embrace this challenge. . . I am confident that under Dr. Tandon’s leadership, momentum will continue and expand to meet this need.
