Pediatric Urology Medal

Edmond T. Gonzales, Jr. DR. EDMOND GONZALES was born in New Orleans where he attended college at Loyola University and medical school at Tulane University. He completed his urology residency training at Duke University in North Carolina where he trained with James Glenn and E. Everett Anderson. Dr. Alan Perlmutter recruited Edmond to Children’s Hospital of Michigan to join him in the still budding field of pediatric urology. Dr. Gonzales was able to hone his surgical skills and clinical acumen during his time as Alan’s partner. However, he and his wife soon grew tired of the cold winters and longed to be closer to their parents, still in New Orleans. The opportunity to relocate to Houston was offered to Dr. Gonzales by Dr. C. Eugene Carlton who embraced the notion of sub specialization in the field of urology. Thus, Edmond moved to Houston, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) in 1974, one of the first pediatric urologists to settle west of the Mississippi River. Since then he has headed the pediatric urology efforts in Houston and southeast Texas. Dr. Gonzales rapidly readjusted to the South and established Texas Children’s Hospital as one of the leading pediatric urology facilities in the country. His remarkable career has spanned the last 40 years during which time he has held essentially every leadership position in our field. Dr. Gonzales has served as the program chair and President of the Society of Pediatric Urology and program chair, secretary and chair person of the Section on Urology of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). He served as head of the AAP Council on Sections Surgical Action Panel, was instrumental in establishing guidelines for the subspeciality certification of pediatric urology and was the leader of developing the match program for our fellowships. He started a pediatric urology fellowship in the early 1980s as one of the original six in the United States. Edmond led the division of pediatric urology at Baylor College of Medicine for almost 40 years and served as the urology department’s interim chief for 2 years. In 2005 he was named The Edmond T. Urology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. He was the first chief of pediatric urology at Texas Children’s Hospital, chief of surgery for more than 20 years and its first Surgeon in Chief. Dr. Gonzales continues in a leadership role as the Director of Surgical Services at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. He has published nearly 100 peer reviewed articles and more than 50 book chapters. Dr. Gonzales has trained over 30 pediatric urology fellows and was one of the initial mentors in his field. Edmond has been an examiner for the American Board of Urology for almost 20 years. He has traveled around the world as a visiting professor, and has been a mentor and friend to innumerable students, residents, foreign observers, fellows and fellow faculty. Despite his stellar success as an academic urologist, his proudest achievements most certainly are those outside TCH, Baylor and medicine. Dr. Gonzales has been married to Lynne for almost 50 years. He was married weeks after graduating from Tulane and within 25 months Michelle and Cheri were born. Lisa followed a few years later and then Trey. Edmond remains exceptionally close to his 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Not a week goes by that he does not mention his family, how they are doing and what they have accomplished. He takes particular joy in seeing them and relishes those times he spends with his entire family. Dr. Gonzales is truly as nice a surgeon as one will ever meet. He combines the best in a person with the skills of a dedicated educator. At a recent event he was described as kind, understanding, empathetic, caring and patient. He has had a remarkable career that spans the life of pediatric urology. Dr. Gonzales continues to contribute to our field and is recognized as one of the international leaders in pediatric urology.
