EFCATS Elects New Board A meeting of the Council of EFCATS (the European Federation of Catalysis Societies) was held on the occasion of the Europacat III which was held in Krakow, Poland, from Sunday 31st August until Saturday 6th September inclusive (see following item). The Council, which now meets once per year, is made up of two representatives of each of the 25 national member societies together with the office bearers of the Federation. As well as representing the European catalysis community in all appropriate European fora, the EFCATS Board is responsible for defending Catalysis in Chemistry, Catalysis in Europe and European Catalysis in the world, for encouraging the younger generation of scientists to present their work and enter fully into the Catalysis world (in both industry and university), for selecting the venues of future Europacat meetings and monitoring the arrangements for such meetings, and also for electing the office bearers who are responsible for carrying out the day to day business of EFCATS. The latest meeting of the Board, held on August 31st in Krakow, attended by 30 national representatives, finalised the details of the venue for Europacat IV: the new conference centre in Rimini, on the Adriatic Sea coast of Northern Italy and in close proximity to cities such as Bologna, Florence and Venice; the meeting dates will be 5th to 10th September 1999. Preliminary discussion also took place on the venue for EFCATS V; the host country and the dates will be finalised in the first half of 1998. The new office bearers of EFCATS were also elected by the national representative by secret ballot at the meeting in Krakow. These are: President, Dr. Jacques C. Vedrine (France); Vice-President, Professor Jerzy Haber (Poland);Treasurer, Professor Luigo Forni (Italy), Secretary, Professor Antonio Cortes (Spain); Past President, Professor Eric Derouane (UK). The 1998 Fran<;ois Gault lectureship was awarded during the EFCATS Board meeting to Professor Gert Ertl from Berlin. The lecturer will deliver six to eight lectures at venues all over Europe following the direct invitation by a number of the different national catalysis socie-

EFCATS now has its own home-page on the worldwide web (address: http://www.icp.csic.es/efcats) and details of the membership of the Council and of some of the activities of EFCATS and the associated societies can be found there. The page also gives information on the 12th International Congress on Catalysis (12th ICC), to be held in Granada, Spain, from 9th to 14th July 2000, courses in Catalysis in Europe. Information concerning the activities of the member societies of happenings in Europe relevant to catalysis for inclusion on the WWW page should be sent to Professor Cortes at

Some Recent Meetings Involving Catalysis The 36th IUPAC Congress, organized by the New Swiss Chemical Society, was held in Geneva (Switzerland) from 17th to 22nd August, 1997. The general subject of the meeting was 'Frontiers in chemistry, new perspectives for the 2000s'.The Chairman of the Organizing Committee was Professor Jacques Weber and the Chairman of the Scientific Committee was Professot Fram;ois Diederich. The President ofthe New Swiss Chemical Society, Professor Alexander yon Zalewsky, was also present. Two of the plenary lectures were devoted to catalysis: P.G. Schultz (Dept. Chem., Univ. Calif., Berkeley) on 'Lessons from the immune system: rom catalysis to materials'; and G. Ertl (Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Berlin) on 'Dynamics of reactions at solid surfaces'. A number of oral presentations (keynote, invited and short lectures) as well as posters were related to different areas of catalysis. The most recent Annual Meeting of the Polish Chemical Society was held in Gdansk from 22rid to 26th September, 1997. It was organized by the Faculty of Chemistry of Gdansk University, the Faculty of Chemistry of Gdansk Polytechnical University and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Gdansk Medical Academy. The whole conference was divided into 22 sections, a symposium and six microsymposia. Section S-20 was devoted to catalysis. In addition to a section report and ten oral presentations, some 31 posters related
