148~ FESCHENKO, AA SHUIF~,MI Reducing the destructive action of an explosion.fiR. SOV .MIN. SC I .VI0,N1,1974, P37- 41. Two basic methods used to protect engineering structures and rock masses from the destructive action of explosiens, namely the method of the screening layer and the method of the precut slot are described and compared.

1487 WEST, JM GKN FOUNDATIONS, RYTON, GB The role of ground improvement in foundation engineering. 5F,1T, 7R. GEOTECHN, V25, N1,1975, PT1- 78. It is argued that vibro-compaction and dynamic consolidation techniques may be applied to solve a wide range of foundation problems and so affect traditional foundation selection procedures. Several examples of the application of these methods to the stabilization of both granular and cohesive soils are given.

Bolts and anchors 1488 DAS,BM TRI-STATE COLL.ANGOLA IND.USA SEELY, JR TR I- STATE COLL. ANGOLA IND .USA Passive resistance of inclined anchors in sand. technical note.iF,hR. J. GEOTECH. ENGNG DIV .ASCE,VI01, GT3,MAR .1975, P353-356. Laboratory model tests to determine the effect of anchor inclinatien on the ultimate passive reslsts~ce of shallow anchors in sand, with limited width-to-height ratio, subJected to a horizontal pull, are reported.

The mechanisms of bond are discussed and anchor design procedures employed in practice are reviewed. Data abstracted from the fields of reinforced and prestressed concrete, relating to the magnitude and distribution of bond, are presented.

With the soil-resin stabilized samples, experimental curves are obtained showing how unconfined compressive strengths are related to percent stabilizer at different temperatures with different catalysts, such as pentachlorophenol and ferric chloride. The study indicates that at a lower temperature the ferric chloride gives a slightly better strength than pentachlorophenol, but at a higher temperature the pentachlorophenol gives a higher strength.
