Effect of feed supplementation with L-carnitine on growth, metabolism and body composition of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) K. Becker, U. Focken Institutefor Animal Production in the Tropics and Subtropics (480), Hohenheim University, D-70593 Stuttgart, Germany

Several experiments have been carried out in which supplementation of feeds with L-camitine has shown positive effects on the growth and performance of domestic animals and fish. Among the effects described are better feed conversion, higher protein content of gain and superior tolerance to environmental stress factors. In order to investigate the effects of L-camitine supplementation on growing carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) , we designed feeding experiments with 3 levels of L-camitine supplementation (200,400 and 600 mg/kg), one amino-acid supplementation (Met and Lys in the quantities necessary for the synthesis of 400 mg L-camitine) and one control with no supplementation. These experiments covered the body mass range from 30 to 125 g live mass and the whole trial was carried out in a flow-through respirometer, enabling us to monitor energy, protein and oxygen budgets for 15 individuals (3 per treatment) for a total of 60 days. Although there were no statistically significant differences between the treatments due to very high coefficients of variation within the experimental groups ( > 15%), there were consistent indices for better feed conversion, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio as well as lower oxygen consumption in the experimental groups with 400 and 600 mg L-camitine/kg resp. Feed demand per unit of live mass gain was reduced by 10% and oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion by 15% compared to the unsupplemented control group. These effects, if verified in further experiments, could have an impact on intensive aquaculture, reducing costs and environmental hazards due to emission of nitrogen and probably phosphorus.
